Corvallis, Hamilton split weekend games

Unlike the other seasons, spring sports do not always get started with a bang. Mother Nature intervenes with weather that isn’t the best for top performances whether it is softball, track or tennis. Schedules are often changed to try to outfox her but Mother Nature usually has the last laugh. Hamilton and Corvallis were scheduled to play softball in Butte on Saturday but those games were moved to Friday and played in Anaconda due to the weather. Track meets were also postponed because of weather issues.

Hamilton opened their season against Stevensville on the diamond on Thursday. The Yellowjackets are in a rebuilding year with a new, old coach. Mike Hunter has come back on board to lead the ‘Jackets. Senior Maddie Jones leads the team from either the pitching position or the catching position. She is still recovering from shoulder surgery but still managed to smack a homer against Hamilton.

Hamilton only has two seniors on the roster, Liz Taylor and Presley Chadwick. Although Taylor normally wears the blue and gold of Victor, the two schools co-op on softball so Taylor becomes a Bronc in the springtime. Chadwick also has quite a bit of experience and coach Melodee Mildenberger is looking for her to be a leader of the young team.

Hamilton played a strong game against Stevensville and hit the ball well according to Mildenberger. “We didn’t know what to expect going in, seeing what our line up was going to look like, but they all hit great.”

Taylor, who was 4-for-4 at bat, swatted two grand slam home runs and finished with 11 RBIs in the 35-4 game. Rebecka Hood pitched the win for the Broncs and went 2-for-2 at bat.
