Trevor Subith is finding baseball in Montana is a bit different, not bad, just different. The Southern California transplant moved here in March and immediately took over as the manager of the Bitterroot Bucs, the American Legion team in Florence. That team draws from Victor, Stevensville, and Florence.
Subith was the head coach for the Hemet, California, high school for 11 years. Baseball there is a year-around sport with the head coach having access to the players from August to June. He is making the adjustment to Legion ball with players coming from different schools, and players being multi sport athletes, and says the team is coming together.
“We’re implementing my style, getting these guys to buy in,” he said. “It’s a process and it’s getting better. The main focus of mine is being disciplined.”
Subith went on to say he has some good athletes who are improving. The Bucs have some batters who are batting over .400, and they have some batting under .200.
“We’re just trying to find that middle and do what we can and win games,” he concluded.
The Bucs have a trio of pitchers that Subith considers one of the strong points of the team. Dylan Gavlak, Reese LeSoine, and Liam LeCoure all rotate through and are pitching well. Bo Zeiler does a good job coming in and throwing strikes too according to Subith. The top of the batting order is very strong and he says the defense is getting better. It’s just a matter of putting it all together now.
The Bitterroot Bucs took on the Glacier Twins in a nine-inning game on Saturday and lost, 9-3. They played Glacier again on Sunday. The game was tied until the top of the sixth when Glacier they took the lead and went on to win, 4-3. Gavlak was the pitcher for the Bucs. Brenden Bailey had three hits and two RBIs.
The Bitterroot Red Sox played a double header against the Missoula AA Mavs. In the first game, with Kyle Norman pitching, the Red Sox lost to the Missoula team, 6-3. All three of the Red Sox runs were in the fourth inning. Norman went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Austin Ray went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In the second game, with Jonathan Ringer pitching, the Red Sox won, 4-2. Nate Loranger went 2-for-3 with a double. Chase Conner also went 2-for-3 and had an RBI.
