I am one of the candidates for “City of Hamilton Local Government Review Commissioner.” Who is Derrell Poole? Why is Derrell interested in this position and what he may offer should he be elected?
I came to Hamilton from Denver, CO in 2010. I am a Civil Drafter by trade and worked for engineers from 1985 to 2009. I served in the United States Navy on a small destroyer where I hunted for Soviet submarines. Today I own a small business that offers repair and customizing services for high-end model locomotives that often cost 1000s of dollars. My clients are from across the nation and around the globe.
I have placed my bid to serve as one of your Government Study Commissioners because I believe that we the people must be willing to involve ourselves in our government on all levels. However, active involvement is something new to me. It was never my desire to be a politician nor did I come to Montana with the least interest in such occupations. But in the same sense of duty that I served in our armed forces I now seek to serve in my community. Of course, these are not aspects unique to me but they are stated in all sincerity. I have no desire to be a politician, only to serve.
I believe freedom is established and protected through personal responsibility – that to do right, even when you don’t “have” to, enforces freedom for all of us. I do not claim to be without fault nor do I claim to be wiser than anyone else. I am certain there are others who could better fulfill this position but I have learned that commitment often outweighs expertise.
I offer an open mind controlled by common sense and an acute sense of fairness. I believe in justice and equality – not as political talking points but as the core values and founding principles upon which our nation was established. There are issues I do feel strongly about but I realize I do not intrinsically know what is proper without the due diligence of critical consideration.
I believe truth is established only in facts and that “feeling good” is no basis for believing something. I seek the truth before I make up my mind because I understand that Truth is the only safeguard of Justice. I will do my best to be as objective as I can in all aspects of this position. I can do no better than that.
