Vester C. ‘Smokey’ Long

July 15, 2014 by Editor

vester longVester C. Long, known as Smokey to those who called him friend, entered into rest at home in Placerville, California on June 22, 2014.

He was born in Lemon Grove, California on January 27, 1922 to Virgil and Helen Pfister Long who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his faithful wife Mildred; son David; three brothers: Paul, Melvin and Ivan; sister Margie and great grandson Jessie Leigh Lyman. Smokey is survived by his son Larry; four daughters: Judith Larson, Connie Ayers, Jonnie Calia and Dena Small; 15 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Smokey had a full life and lived it to the fullest. His passion was rodeo and anything to do with horses. He was skilled in the art of Roman style and saddle bronc riding. He chose the profession of timber faller, beginning with a cross-cut saw. He was a master at his trade in both Montana and California. He enjoyed hunting in the Rockies from an early age when his family moved to Stevensville, Montana. He loved fishing and went every chance he got. He always knew the best fishing holes. He was a successful farmer, a member of the Grange and taught his children the value and stewardship of the land.

Smokey was cremated according to his wishes. His ashes will take flight and fall to earth in the two states which he lived in and loved.
