Construction on the half million dollar Streetscape Project in downtown Stevensville is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, June 6. A groundbreaking ceremony was held last Friday.

The majority of the improvements will take place on the four corners of 2nd and Main Street, where existing sidewalks will be replaced with bulb-outs and landscaping. Other scheduled work includes replacing all the dips in the sidewalks on Main Street between 1st and 4th Streets that are no longer used as driveways, as well as some improvements at the corners of 1st and Main, 3rd and Main, 4th and Main, and East 2nd. The project is being coordinated with the Montana Department of Transportation which has planned a paving project for this summer through downtown Stevensville. The Town of Stevensville is also a major partner in the project, with town crews providing much of the demolition work. The project is being funded by Ravalli County through a federal Community Transportation Enhancement Program (CTEP) grant which the Stevensville Main Street Association applied for. The Main Street Association successfully raised about $60,000 in matching grant funds.

Sidewalk demolition work will start on the east side of the 100 block of Main, specifically in front of Blacksmith Brewery (114 Main Street), Lutzenhiser Jewelry (116 Main St.) and Primoris Jewelry (118 Main Street). The southeast corner at the Stevi Café will be left until a later time in the project to coordinate with a town water project involving the hydrant on that corner.
According to officials from Knife River and WGM Engineering, construction of sidewalks in front of businesses will be completed in the shortest time frame possible to minimize disruption to businesses. Every effort will be made to ensure customer accommodations and traffic safety.
Should you have other questions or concerns, contact the Stevensville Main Street Association at 777-3773.
