The local high school rugby team, the Bitterroot Warriors pulled off an upset over the weekend and defeated Simms for the state championship, 41-15. Zander Smith was the leading scorer for the Warriors. The Bitterroot team defeated Helena in the first round and then came back to defeat Kalispell, the No. 1 seed, in the semi finals. Spencer Kanenwisher, one of the team captains, said this is only the Warriors’ second year in the rapidly growing sport. “Just this year, with the introduction of the high school girls’ league, interest was high but now the interest in the sport in the valley will grow even more.” Star file photo.
