Stevi sweeps Hamilton

Falcons win at Homecoming

Stevi sweeps Hamilton

Stevensville swept Hamilton in three games Thursday on the volleyball court, 25-20, 25-20, and 25-11. According to Stevensville coach Lindsey Day, the team has struggled in game one in the past. “We’ve been kind of coming out slow and not having the motivation and the talk we’ve needed.”

The Lady Yellowjackets quickly established their play at the net with aggressive blocking and laying down kills that kept Hamilton on their heels. With Britney Chilcott, Alexa Omlid, Kyla Paulson and Molly Brewer controlling the net, Hamilton could not get into their offense very well according to coach D’Ette Monson.

“We were on defense because Stevensville had a great attack,” said Monson.

Monson was pleased with freshman Kennedi Chadwick’s serving and said Rebecka Hood had a nice game. Hood finished with 14 digs and nine kills.

Stevensville had a scare prior to the game when senior Maddie Jones cut her toe severely. But after a trip to the doctor, the feisty player was able to play. “I’m sure she played in a lot of pain,” said Day.

Day was especially pleased with freshman Kyla Paulson’s game. “She doesn’t play like a freshman at all, she really gets aggressive and is not timid. She’s very court smart.”

Falcons win at Homecoming

Sometimes, the Homecoming game is a bit of a letdown after all of the hoopla of the parade, the contests and just Homecoming Week in general. That was not the case in Florence on Saturday. Although the Falcons were excited and eager to play, so were the Superior Bobcats. The combination made for a very exciting football game on Saturday afternoon.

Spencer Burns takes aim during the Florence Homecoming game against Superior on Saturday with his blockers in position. Shown are Damon Ward (62), Jim Finley (70) and Tanner Lavering (71) keeping him safe from the Bobcats. Jean Schurman photo.

Superior didn’t let much time tick off the clock before they put points on the scoreboard. They scored in less than two minutes of the opening kickoff when matt Campbell caught a 36-yard pass from Tanner Coon down the sidelines. The Chris Eriksson kick was good and the game was on.

But Florence came back to score a couple of minutes later when Spencer Burns scrambled around the backfield and then let loose with a 33 yard bomb to Dylan Reynolds for the score. The Zach Newbary kick was good and the game was tied.

Superior again went to the air and down the sidelines for another touchdown in the second quarter but on the ensuing kickoff, Newbary took the ball in the endzone and raced back 110 yards for a Florence touchdown. However, the long run was too much for him and he missed the PAT attempt.

Superior scored twice more in the second quarter, both passes from Coon to Campbell.

“They are extremely deceptive,” said Florence coach Terry Maki. “They are cagy and their coach has been around for a long time.”

After the half, Florence went to a running game, sending the backs up the middle. The strategy paid off. Cody Lund drove the ball up the middle to put Florence into scoring position. Burns scrambled across the line but the touchdown was negated because of a hold. The savvy senior then went to the air and hit Riley Philips from 30 yards out for the score. The Falcons were still behind but they were gaining on the Bobcats.

Lund had a four yard run and then added a two-point conversion on to that to tie the game late in the third quarter. “They just started giving me the ball and I had some really good blockers out front.”

But Superior was not about to give up. Ericksson raced 14 yards for a touchdown with four minutes left in the third quarter. The extra point was blocked and it was up Florence to win the game. Lund plunged into the end zone from one yard out to tie the game. The Newbary kick was good and the Falcons had the 34-33 lead and the win.

“It was a defining moment,” said Maki of the first half. “You have to suck it up. You know you’re not playing as well as you can. We pulled it together and played a good second half.”

This was the first conference game of the year for both teams. Maki said the win was huge. “This was a huge game for us, we had to beat them. It was a good win for us.”

Lund had 113 yards on 20 carries. Florence had 268 yards rushing and limited Superior to only 63 yards. Burns completed 15 of 25 passes for 178 yards.

Stevensville whipped up on Whitefish, 59-0, in non-conference action. The Yellowjackets scored 47 points in the first half alone. Quarterback Caleb Vance had a 33 yard run and then threw 24 yards to Josh Schultz and also had another 5-yard scoring pass to Josh Lords. Jalen Pfau had a 27 yard TD run. Schultz was on the receiving end of a Tyler Murray pass for six points. Murray had two scoring runs himself, one for 31 yards and another for 54 yards. Dalton Belcourt finished out the scoring with a 35-yard reception from Murray and a 25-yard punt return. Mitch Blakey kicked five PATs for the Yellowjackets who improved to 3-1.

Hamilton topped Libby in a showdown, 47-37. The Broncs spotted Libby 15 points in the first quarter before opening up to score 20 points in the second quarter. Josh Brenneman passed for 242 yards and completed 19 of 31 passes. He also rushed for 179 yards and had four touchdowns. Cody Noffsinger had two touchdowns and rushed for 33 yards. Semisi Rigby also had an eight-yard reception from Brenneman for the Broncs.

Ronan defeated Corvallis, 38-26, in Ronan. Corvallis got on the board early when Trevor Brown caught a 63-yard pass from Logan Connors. The Blue Devils’ second TD was also a Connors-to-Brown pass from 64 yards. Out. The duo connected once more from 56 yards out in the third quarter. Connors called his own number for a five-yard scoring run for the final Blue Devil score.

Boulder defeated Darby, 47-6. Aaron Johnston returned a kickoff for 75 yards for the lone Tiger TD.

Victor fell to Drummond, 55-12, in Western C action. Dennis Mitcham caught an 18-yard scoring pass from Kurt Manely for the first Pirate touchdown. Kyle Ball was on the receiving end of a Manely pass for the second six points.
