‘Regulators, ride!’

Community banks feeling the crunch

By Michael Howell

Most analysts are in agreement that the current financial crisis that has sent economies around the world into a tailspin has its roots in a burst of irresponsible lending on the sub-prime mortgage market combined with a lack of oversight. In response, according to a recent article by Damian Paletta and David Erloch in the Wall Street Journal (Sept. 13, 2010), global regulators have “pushed through a historic remake of the world’s banking regulations – forcing financial institutions to protect against losses – with ripple effects likely to impact everything from mortgages to commercial loans, to credit cards in coming years.” More...

Stevi not ready to pay subdivider

By Michael Howell

The Stevensville Town Council put off a request for payment from John Anderson, the developer of Twin Creeks subdivision, at its September 13 meeting. Anderson requested reimbursement for the costs incurred in upsizing a water line in the subdivision so it could carry the town’s entire water supply along the south side of Middle Burnt Fork Road. David Hipp and his wife were watching an eagle and an osprey challenge each other for fishing rights on a section of the Bitterroot when they noticed something they'd never seen before, two people on surf boards actually surfing the river! According to Hipp, Craig and Lisa Robertson (pictured), who recently moved to Stevensville, are paddle surfers who brought the sport with them. Craig Richardson told Hipp he surfs the ocean and couldn't see why he wouldn't be able to surf the river. Stand up paddle surfing, as it is more commonly known, originated in Hawaii and is now slowly making its way to the mainland U.S. David Hipp photo.

No previous notice that public comment was being sought was ever issued by the agency. More...

By Michael Howell

After a lifetime working as a restaurateur, Peter Bugoni is not yet ready to hang up the apron. So instead of learning to play shuffle board he decided to help his boys start a business. The result is La Cucina Italiana, an Italian style sausage business. More...
