Stevensville Founders Day

"Everyone thought we would be able to find nothing better anywhere else." -- Father Nicolas Point, S.J. upon the founding of St. Mary's Mission, on September 24, 1841.

On a cool autumn day, Father Pierre DeSmet, S.J., the indefatigable missionary to the American Indians, planted a rough hewn wooden cross on the east bank of the Bitter Root River, an event that established the first pioneer settlement in Montana. He named it St. Mary's. A little village grew around the mission and is known in the history books as St. Mary's Village. John Owen's trading post, Fort Owen, attracted more settlers to the community. In 1864 the village was plotted into a town and was named Stevensville.

The Stevensville Civic Club, along with the staff of Historic St. Mary's Mission, is hosting a Founders Day celebration on Friday, September 24 at 5 p.m. at St. Mary’s Mission, 401 W. 4th Street, honoring the 169th year since Father DeSmet and his little band of missionaries raised the cross and proclaimed the site, which the residents of Stevensville still recognize, as "nothing better anywhere else." There will be a short ceremony followed by refreshments and conversation.

Sunday, October 3

Blessing of the Animals

The annual Blessing of the Animals service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, October 3, at 3 p.m. October 3 is the traditional feast day of St. Francis of Assisi - patron saint of animals, and churches all over the world open their doors to creatures of all kinds.

In earlier days, farm animals were brought to receive a fertility blessing. These days the church sanctuary is often full of a lively assortment including cats, dogs, snakes, pigs, sheep, goats, horses, hamsters, birds, hermit crabs, chickens and rabbits.

In the blessing of the animals, participants honor the many relationships between humankind and animal kind: whether of pet to guardian, or between a sight-impaired person and their seeing-eye dog, or that between a rancher and a herd of cattle, or a fisherman and the creatures of the sea. Participants acknowledge the gift of creatures who supply our food, carry our burdens, share our fortunes, provide us with clothing, give us companionship, who have tendered a service to humankind since the world began and who, in the words of Francis of Assisi, are, indeed, our brothers and sisters.

Father Steve Oreskovich will conduct the worship service at St. Paul’s, and following the service there will be refreshments for both animals and their humans downstairs. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is located at 600 S. 3rd, at the corner of S. 3rd and Desmet in Hamilton. Registration begins at 2:30.

After 10 weeks of chemotherapy and three surgeries Tyler is facing seven more months of chemo and an amputation of his leg at the knee. All of Ty’s treatment will be taking place at Sacred Heart Children’s hospital in Spokane, WA. While the family has been very blessed by a wonderful community and loving friends and family, Ty’s condition is requiring that the family liquidate most of their horses. About 12 head of horses will be auctioned off, most of which are well bred, well started registered quarter horses. In addition to the horses there will be training and lesson packages auctioned off along with tack and stallion breedings. There will be a trail course set up to ride the horses through. There will be food available and music to dance to. For more information contact Jenny Hennes at 369-3987 or HYPERLINK "mailto:jraehennes@yahoo.com" jraehennes@yahoo.com.
