Who says there’s no free lunch?

By Michael Howell

Whoever said that there’s no such thing as a free lunch hasn’t been in the hallways of the Stevensville High School or the Junior High School at noon on Wednesdays. It doesn’t matter if you are a student, a teacher, an administrator, or just some parent or reporter passing through; there are people there doling out free hot dogs and apples to anyone who wants one.

According to High School Vice Principal Robert Dobell, who is part of the group of parents that formed the free lunch program, from 400 to 500 hot dogs per week are being served at no cost to mostly students in the high school and the junior high school on Wednesdays. No school or tax dollars are involved. It is all done on donations with volunteer parents to help.

Last Wednesday each member of the volunteer group was given a letter of award by the school for outstanding performance. High School Principal Brian Gum said that when students make a special effort to contribute to the well being of the school they are awarded with a letter of commendation so it seemed like the parents that show the commitment and make an extra contribution should also be recognized and awarded.

Dobell said, “It’s basically a chance for community members to get to know the kids a little better and for the kids to get to know some of the parents.”
