Florence rally falls short

The Florence Falcons almost made the comeback. After giving up four runs in the third inning to Loyola, Florence came back with three runs in the fifth inning and then two in the final inning but it wasn’t enough. Florence lost, 7-6. Florence had five errors in the game.

“We’ve been telling them all week in practice that an error will lose the game,” said Florence coach Ciara Hansen. “And it’s just true, a couple of errors lost the game.”

Florence tied the game up in the first inning when Brittany Heinz laid down a bunt and then scored on Haley Cole’s sacrifice out. But then, in the third inning, the wheels came off the Falcon wagon for a bit. Missed balls in the outfield, a hit batter and overthrows allowed the Breakers to score four times. Florence then went three-three down to end the inning with a four run deficit.

Heinz hit a triple to score a runner and give the Falcons some momentum. Courtney Byrne hit a triple to score Heinz and then Chelsea Ralls had a stand-up double and an RBI to pull the Falcons within one run of Loyola.

The Falcons tightened up their defense and only allowed one runner home in the sixth inning but couldn’t get a run home themselves. Loyola scored once more in the seventh inning but again, the Falcons didn’t give up. Another bunt by Heinz and then an RBI double by Chayla Pederson put one run on the board. Florence scored once more but it was not enough.

“We stuck in there pretty well,” said Hansen. “Our bats came around, it was a little late but they came around and we got a couple of good innings.”

Byrne pitched the entire game for Florence and Sarah Goodman was the pitcher for Loyola. Neither pitcher had a walk in the game.

Florence defeated Troy, 5-2, on Saturday. Byrne had four strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter. Byrne had the only RBI for Florence and was 2-for-3 at bat.

Florence will play Loyola again on Thursday in Missoula.
