The Corvallis boys put on a commanding performance at the Missoula Invitational on Saturday. Behind the victories of Dalton Sybrant, Slater Powell and Austin Landis, the Blue Devils scored 95 points against more than 20 teams from across Western Montana and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Missoula Big Sky finished in second place with 79-? points.

Sybrant continued his dominance in the discus ring and the shot put ring. He threw the discus an impressive 185 feet, 10 inches which puts him 21 feet seven inches ahead of the next best throw this season. That was done by Missoula Sentinel’s Brian Maus. Sybrant won the shot put with a throw of 55 feet, 9 inches, his best effort this year as well.

Corvallis’ Austin Landis had a great throw in the javelin to win that event. The junior threw the spear 190 feet, one inch for the win and climbed to third on the deep list in that event.

Slater Powell easily took the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.87, the fastest in the state at this point of the season. Powell was second in the 300 hurdles, behind Big Sky’s Drew Owens. Powell’s time of 40.29 was his best time this season and is the second fastest time in the state currently in the high hurdles.

The 1600 relay team of Tyler Bonngard, Drew Zeiler, Mahlone Jessop and Powell clocked a 3:29.67 in that race to easily outdistance second place Big Sky. That, too, is a state best at this point of the season.

Darby, Hamilton and Stevensville finished in the middle of the pack, placing 9th, 11th, and 14th, respectively. Darby’s Seth Garbett finished the 3,200 in first place with a time of 9:56.43. Matt Stout was fourth in that race.

Heather Demorest of Darby ran into a speedy distance runner from Idaho in the 1,600 and 3,200. Kinsey Gomez of Coeur d’Alene won both the distance races but Demorest finished in second place. Mariah Cress launched the javelin 131-3 to win that event.

Brekka Johnson of Stevensville had a busy day. She was second in the triple jump and fifth in the 200. She finished sixth in the 100 and sixth in the 400 as well. Hamilton’s Misha Trotter was second in the 800 and third in the 3,200. Paige Squire of Corvallis was second in the 100 hurdles.

While the rest of the valley’s teams were at Missoula, Florence was competing at the Bigfork Invitational which featured 16 teams. The Lady Falcons took first, defeating second place Bigfork by nine points. Florence had 73 points. Katie Niemeir won both the 100 and 300 hurdles. She clocked a time of 16.18 in the 100. She ran a 45.78 in the 300 hurdles, one of the fastest times in the state for that race. Odessa Conley won the 400 with a time of 1:03.9, edging out Malecha of Eureka who had a time of 1:04.3. Florence also won the 1,600 relay.

The Florence boys finished back in the pack but did receive points from Alex Mitchell in the high jump and both hurdles races. Brandon Lorensen finished fourth in the triple jump.

Tough sixth inning for Corvallis

Corvallis jumped out to an early lead against Ronan in a dual on the diamond Thursday. The Blue Devils had three runs in the first inning and then added two more in the second when Angie Henderson and Markie Gurley crossed the plate. With freshman Alex Ewing pitching, Corvallis held its own in the early innings. Ewing made a couple of strikeouts and fielding by her teammates kept the Maidens from gaining the upper hand early.

But Ronan capitalized on some mental mistakes by the Blue Devils and tied the game at 5-all in the fifth inning. Corvallis couldn’t find a way to get past Ronan’s ace pitcher Kaylee Larson and couldn’t put any runs on the board in the fifth and sixth innings.

“I think Kaylee Larson will make All-State this year,” said Corvallis coach Rich Borden of the Ronan pitcher. “She and Shelby (Russ of Frenchtown) are two of the best we’ve seen. I’m proud of the way we swung our bats today.”

Corvallis did get nine hits and an almost home run by Megan Auch in the bottom of the 7th inning when Corvallis was making a rally. Auch popped the ball long to left field where the ball clipped the top of the fence and rolled back inside the field for a double.

Ronan won, 9-7, after scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Auch had a double and two RBIs for the Blue Devils. Amber Bradshaw also had two RBIs.

Saturday was a tough day for the Blue Devils as well. They faced off against the Butte Central Maroons and the Anaconda Copperheads. Butte Central defeated Corvallis 8-4. Clean-up batter Markie Gurley was 3-for-4 and had two RBIs in the game. She had two doubles. Angie Henderson had a double as well and finished with an RBI. Amber Bradshaw had two RBIs in the game.

Both teams scored early and often in the Anaconda game. Anaconda had an 8-6 lead at the end of three innings and held Corvallis to only one run the rest of the game. Auch did get her home run in this game along with an RBI. Ruby Ostrander was 2-for-3 and had two RBIs and a double for the Blue Devils. Danielle Morris was 2-for-4 and had two RBIs also.

Hamilton also played Anaconda and Butte Central on Saturday. Butte Central defeated the Lady Broncs, 7-4. Melissa Hood had a double and Kaylie Strandberg was 2-for-3 for Hamilton with an RBI.

Hamilton scored in every inning but the fifth in the 12-2 victory over Anaconda. Jessica Bourne pitched the win with three strikeouts. Hamilton had 12 runs on 10 hits with only one error. Nicole Hood had three RBIs while Presley Chadwick had four.

Florence dropped a close game to Mission, losing 6-5, in nine innings. Brittany Heinz was 2-for-5 with a double for Florence. Mo Chapman had three RBIs for the Falcons as well.

Tennis results

The Hamilton girls made a strong showing against Loyola on the courts on Thursday. Hamilton only lost two matches in the competition and both of those were close. It took Loyola’s Brittany Todd three sets to take down Kelsey Della Silva. Rebecca Hankel and Kimberly Lamar battled Abby Mansch and Vanessa Grossman three sets before falling in that game as well.

The Hamilton boys won three of the four matches in the singles, with only the number one match falling to Loyola.

Bitterroot alums named UM All-Academic

The University of Montana had 39 student-athletes on the 2008-09 Big Sky Conference Winter All-Academic teams, the league office announced recently. The Grizzlies were represented by 18 members of the women’s indoor track and field team, 12 from the men’s indoor track and field team, five from the women’s basketball team and four from the men’s basketball team.

To be eligible, student-athletes needed to participate in at least half of the team’s season competitions and have a 3.2 cumulative grade point average through the end of the fall semester.

Eastern Washington led the Big Sky Conference with 42 selections. Montana and Montana State had 39, Northern Arizona and Weber State 34, Idaho State 32, Northern Colorado 29, Portland State 19 and Sacramento State 13.

Two of the athletes selected were from the Bitterroot. Mac Bloom of Stevensville is a junior majoring in political science. Also selected was Darby’s Kara DeWalt, a junior majoring in biology. Both are members of the University of Montana Track and Field Team.
