As the events progressed, one local athlete showed his athletic prowess even though this was his first time competing in a kilt. Garrett Middleton is no stranger to throwing events. He is a former Illinois state champion in the shot put and the discus events. Currently he is a teacher at Corvallis High School and is the throwing coach for the Blue Devils. With a throwing background, Middleton decided earlier this summer to compete in the games this weekend. However he really didnt know what to expect and how to do some of the events. So he did what any young person would do in this day and age, he turned to You Tube and began to study the events of the Highland Games. He had previously built a throwing field for the discus and shot put at his residence west of Victor for his team to practice at during the summer. But this summer he converted it into a Highland Games practice area. I had the mechanics of throwing, said Middleton. So I just had to adapt to what we were throwing. His style wasnt the only thing he adapted. In one event, the hammer toss, a specialized shoe is recommended. The hammer toss involves standing with your back to the field and tossing a hammer over your back. The hammer is actually a metal sphere, weighing either 16 or 22 pounds, and attached to a wooden or plastic shaft that is no longer than 50 inches. The thrower actually throws from a standing position with no spinning allowed. So the thrower wears metal toe spikes that are from eight to 10 inches long. Middleton had one shoe with a 10-inch long flat iron spike attached to it with bolts. He dug his toe in and with each throw, gained a bit of distance. His first throw may have won had it not taken out some of the branches on the trees gracing the grounds. Middleton had a great first showing. He won the Braemer stone throw (weight for distance) and the open stone throw which is very similar to the shot put only done with an actual stone. He plans on doing some competitions around the Northwest next year and has been encouraged by the visiting athletes to continue his training. The competition ended with the caber toss. The caber the men were tossing was 15 feet long and weighed about 93 pounds. The stewards place the caber upright with the heavy end up and the smaller end on the ground. The athlete then works his hands down to the bottom of the caber, using his body to balance the pole while attempting to pick it up. The actual attempt is when the caber is turned or flipped so that the smaller end passes through the vertical position of 90 degrees (end over end). How the caber lands is the actual score. A perfect score is the 12 oclock position with the competitors shoulders being the center of the clock. After a day of physical competition, the competitors didnt collapse or head for a Guinness. Instead they brought out a longer caber and played some more. Its good stuff, concluded Middleton. I think the crowd would agree. Bitterroot Classic TriathlonSwimmer Dusty Miles reaches for Jeffrey Umlands hand during the Bitterroot Triathlon. The first time team finished in ninth place. Kari Trexler ran the 5K for the team. The Bitterroot Classic Triathlon was held Saturday in Hamilton with a record number of participants competing in the event. The event is a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House. A new record was set in the Mens Overall with Brendan Halpin of Missoula completing the course in 57:36, nine seconds faster than the old record. Geoff lHeureux was second and John Weston third in that category. The womens overall was won by Jennifer Luebke who finished the course with a time of 1:05.14. She is also from Missoula. Megan Gaskill was second and Laura Balis finished in third. The Cool and the Gang team won with a time of 1:08.23. Stevensville opens with a winThe Stevensville Yellowjackets opened their football season with a convincing win over the Columbia Falls Wildcats in Columbia Falls on Friday. Although his team wasnt quite where he had hoped for them to be, first-year coach Hank Praast said it was nice to get the 41-20 win on the road. The Jackets dug themselves a hole early on and were down 20-6 in the first half before turning the game around. We came out and stumbled all over. We didnt do the things weve been working on, said Praast. After a couple of time outs, the young Stevensville team then got going. Praast said a defensive play by Josh Lords set the tone for the turnaround. Lords ran a Wildcat down from behind and stopped him at the three-yard line. The Stevensville defense held in the red zone, stopping a Columbia Falls score. The Jackets then scored and the momentum swung their way. After kicking off to the Wildcats, Jalen Pfau picked off a pass and returned it 55 yards for another Jacket touchdown. Columbia Falls didnt score again while Stevensville scored three more times. They came up with the play when we needed it, said Praast. The individual plays started it and then their teammates got the rest of it done. Lords scored the first touchdown on a seven-yard pass from Caleb Vance. Vance hit Tyler Murray from four yards out for the next score. After Pfaus interception and touchdown, Vance called his own number for a 30-yard scoring run. Josh Haynes caught a 12-yard pass and Billy Andrews recovered a fumble in the end zone for the final two Yellowjacket touchdowns. Vance also had three PATs and a 2-point conversion run. A lot of our juniors and seniors havent played that much but they settled down, got into a groove and started having a lot of fun, concluded Praast. Stevensville will host the Ronan Chiefs on Friday night. Although the Chiefs are quite a bit bigger than the Yellowjackets, Praast said his team is quicker and faster. That game begins at 7 pm. Laurels Alex Linse came back and scored to tie the game and then the Locomotives scored again to take the lead. Skyler Mousley scored off of a Kaiam Syster pass to tie the game up. Corvallis took the lead at 58 minutes when Tristan Powers hit the back of the net. But Colyn Hons of Laurel scored with two minutes left to tie the game. The Corvallis girls lost to Laurel, 10-1. Ayden Eickhoff had the Blue Devils only goal. Fair rodeo on tapThe Ravalli County Fair Rodeo is one of the more important rodeos on the Northern Rodeo Association tour. The season began the last weekend of May and has had cowboys and cowgirls traipsing across Montana from Darby to Poplar and Eureka to Wibaux. With only the Hamilton, Helmville and Kalispell rodeos remaining, contestants are jockeying to earn the final spots for a trip to the finals. The junior events have $300 purses for each event and the adults will vie for the $2,000 added money in each of the events, making this one of the richest NRA rodeos in the state. A win here could propel a contestant from the bottom to the top of the standings with one good catch or ride. There are a few local cowboys who are in the top 15 in the standings and could move up in the standings. Bridger Chambers of Stevensville is setting in 14th place in steer wrestling according to the unofficial standings on the NRA website. He has earned $1,403.23 this year in steer wrestling. The father/son team of Tim Chadwick and Grey Chadwick of Corvallis are doing well this year in team roping. Tim Chadwick is sitting in 14th place in the heading standings with $1,183.65 earned. Son Grey is in 14th place in the heeling standings with $1,103.56. Randy Sacks is in sixth place in the rookie heading standings. Brandon Yerian is sitting in second place in the junior break away standings. This Corvallis youth has won $1,446.72 this year. Victors Ryanne Tracey is in 15th with $163.20. The rodeo at the fair is always well attended and offers some of the best livestock around. Dick and Teri Jo Lyman of Jacobs Livestock and Rodeo produce the rodeo. Based out of Great Falls, this family run business puts on a show that is sure to please both old and new fans of rodeo. The rodeo performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday night this year. The fun begins at 7 pm both nights. Slack will be held Friday morning at 8 a.m. Sports Schedules Updated June 3, 2010Stevensville Golf 2010 August 12, 2010 Thursday 1st day of Practice August 16, 2010 Monday Anaconda Invite Old Works GC 9:00 AM August 19, 2010 Thursday Ronan Invite Ronan CC 9:00 AM August 23, 2010 Monday Butte Central Invite Highlands GC 9:00 AM August 24, 2010 Tuesday Polson Triangle Polson 1:00 PM Tee Times September 10, 2010 Friday Anaconda Invite Anaconda CC 9:00 AM September 14, 2010 Tuesday Hamilton Invite Hamilton GC 9:00 AM September 17, 2010 Friday Dillon Invite Dillon CC 9:00 AM September 20, 2010 Monday Frenchtown Invite Frenchtown GC 9:00 AM September 25, 2010 Saturday Divisional Tournament Hamilton GC 10:00 AM October 1-2, 2010 Friday-Sat State Tournament Laurel TBA Stevensville Soccer 2010 August 16, 2010 Monday 1st day of Practice August 27, 2010 Friday Whitefish HOME 2:00 GV/BJV 4:00 BV/GJV August 31, 2010 Tuesday Libby Libby 2:00 BV 4:00 GV/BJV September 4, 2010 Saturday Hamilton Hamilton 11:00 GV/BJV 1:00 BV/GJV September 9, 2010 Thursday Stillwater Christian Kalispell 4:00 Girls only September 11, 2010 Friday Frenchtown HOME 4:00 GV 6:00 BV September 18, 2010 Saturday Loyola Loyola 1:00 BV 3:00 GV September 21, 2010 Tuesday Frenchtown Frenchtown 3:00 BV 5:00 GV September 24, 2010 Friday Corvallis Corvallis 3:00 BV 5:00 GV September 27, 2010 Monday Valley Christian Missoula Fort 4:00 BV September 30, 2010 Thursday Hamilton HOME 3:00 BV/GJV 5:00 GV/BJV October 2, 2010 Saturday Stillwater Christian HOME 1:00 Girls only October 5, 2010 Tuesday Loyola HOME 2:00 GV 4:00 BV October 9, 2010 Saturday Corvallis HOME 11:00 GV 1:00 BV October 15-16,2010 Friday-Sat 1st Round of Playoffs TBA October 22-23, 2010 Friday-Sat Semi-Final Playoffs TBA October 29-30, 2010 Friday-Sat State Championship TBA Stevensville Volleyball 2010 August 16, 2010 Monday 1st day of Practice August 31, 2010 Tuesday Anaconda Anaconda Fr-4:15 JV-5:45 V-7:30 September 2, 2010 Thursday Ronan Ronan Fr-4:15 JV-5:45 V-7:30 September 7, 2010 Tuesday Dillon HOME Fr-3:30 JV-3:30 V-5:00 September 10-11, 2010 Friday-Sat Tipoff Pool Play Columbia Falls TBA September 14, 2010 Tuesday Polson Home Fr-4:30 JV-6:00 V-7:30 September 16, 2010 Thursday Hamilton HOME Fr-4:30 JV-6:00 V-7:30 September 23, 2010 Thursday Frenchtown HOME Fr-4:30 JV-6:00 V-7:30 September 28, 2010 Tuesday Corvallis HOME Fr-4:30 JV-6:00 V-7:30 September 30, 2010 Thursday Loyola Loyola Fr-4:00 JV-5:30 V-7:00 October 2, 2010 Saturday Anaconda HOME Fr-1:00 JV-2:30 V-4:15 October 7, 2010 Thursday Hamilton Hamilton Fr-4:15 JV-5:45 V-7:30 October 9, 2010 Saturday Dillon Dillon Fr-1:00 JV-2:30 V-4:15 October 14, 2010 Thursday Ronan HOME Fr-4:30 JV-6:00 V-7:30 October 19, 2010 Tuesday Corvallis Corvallis Fr-4:15 JV-5:45 V-7:30 October 21, 2010 Thursday Columbia Falls Columbia Falls Fr-12:00 JV-12:00 V-1:30 October 21, 2010 Thursday Browning Columbia Falls Fr-3:00 JV-3:00 V-4:30 October 29, 2010 Fri Frenchtown Frenchtown Fr-4:15 JV-5:45 V-7:30 November 4-6, 2010 Th-Fri-Sat Divisional Tournament Dillon TBA November 11-13, 2010 Th-Fri-Sat State Tournament Bozeman TBA
