First Bitterroot Scottish Irish games a hit

To quote Charles Dickens, “it was the best of times.” The Bitterroot Scottish Irish Festival and the Highland Games were outstanding on Saturday. The event offered something for everyone, from great food and drink to bagpipers and Celtic music. The Daly Mansion grounds were teaming with people having a grand time and soaking up the culture of Scotland and Ireland.

The opening ceremonies featured a parade of all of the clans in attendance. The sound of over 50 bagpipers and drummers marching in formation into the common ground was amazing and left many onlookers in awe. With Daly Mansion in the background, a movie director couldn’t have scripted a better scene.

The day offered something for everyone. From bands and dancers to men in kilts throwing large objects, those who enjoy watching competition had to pick and choose what to watch.

Athletes garbed in green and blue kilts provided some of the most amazing entertainment of the day. About 10 men and three women competed in events ranging from the sheaf toss, stone put, and weight for distance to the impressive caber toss. Many of the competitors were from the Northwest and compete every weekend in the summer.

The games, sanctioned by the Scottish American Athletic Association, had certified judges working with the athletes and scoring their efforts. The games are generally broken down into divisions. These are novice, C, B, A and professional. In addition there is a Master division for those over 40. Because of the limited number of athletes, there were only two divisions, the Novice and the A division.

Early in the day, master athlete Eric Wechter of Canby, Oregon, treated the crowd to an attempt at a world record. Wechter, a three time national champion in the sheaf toss, attempted to set a record in that event. This event requires tossing a 16-pound burlap bundle over a bar using a pitchfork. Most of the forks are modified with only two tines. Although Wechter didn’t set a world record, he did set the mark for future games at the Daly Mansion with a throw of 32 feet.

Wechter’s wife, Regina, also competed. Women enter the same events but use smaller weights. Her caber toss was executed perfectly with the 13-foot caber landing perfectly at the 12 o’clock position after she flipped it end over end. Did I mention this was the diameter of a small telephone pole?

Corvallis school teacher and track coach Garrett Middleton balances the 15 foot caber just before tossing the 90-plus pound pole during the Highland Games at the Daly Mansion on Saturday. Although a rookie at the games, Middleton won two events. Jean Schurman photo.

Regina Wechter of Canby, Oregon, competed in all the events at the Highland Games on Saturday. The former high school sprinter now throws hammers and stones and cabers for fun. Jean Schurman photo.

As the events progressed, one local athlete showed his athletic prowess even though this was his first time competing in a kilt. Garrett Middleton is no stranger to throwing events. He is a former Illinois state champion in the shot put and the discus events. Currently he is a teacher at Corvallis High School and is the throwing coach for the Blue Devils.

With a throwing background, Middleton decided earlier this summer to compete in the games this weekend. However he really didn’t know what to expect and how to do some of the events. So he did what any young person would do in this day and age, he turned to ‘You Tube’ and began to study the events of the Highland Games. He had previously built a throwing field for the discus and shot put at his residence west of Victor for his team to practice at during the summer. But this summer he converted it into a Highland Games practice area.

“I had the mechanics of throwing,” said Middleton. “So I just had to adapt to what we were throwing.”

His style wasn’t the only thing he adapted. In one event, the hammer toss, a specialized shoe is recommended. The hammer toss involves standing with your back to the field and ‘tossing’ a hammer over your back. The hammer is actually a metal sphere, weighing either 16 or 22 pounds, and attached to a wooden or plastic shaft that is no longer than 50 inches. The thrower actually throws from a standing position with no spinning allowed. So the thrower wears metal toe spikes that are from eight to 10 inches long. Middleton had one shoe with a 10-inch long flat iron spike attached to it with bolts. He dug his toe in and with each throw, gained a bit of distance. His first throw may have won had it not taken out some of the branches on the trees gracing the grounds.

Middleton had a great first showing. He won the Braemer stone throw (weight for distance) and the open stone throw which is very similar to the shot put only done with an actual stone. He plans on doing some competitions around the Northwest next year and has been encouraged by the visiting athletes to continue his training.

The competition ended with the caber toss. The caber the men were tossing was 15 feet long and weighed about 93 pounds. The stewards place the caber upright with the heavy end up and the smaller end on the ground. The athlete then works his hands down to the bottom of the caber, using his body to balance the pole while attempting to pick it up. The actual attempt is when the caber is ‘turned’ or flipped so that the smaller end passes through the vertical position of 90 degrees (end over end). How the caber lands is the actual score. A perfect score is the 12 o’clock position with the competitor’s shoulders being the center of the ‘clock’.

After a day of physical competition, the competitors didn’t collapse or head for a Guinness. Instead they brought out a longer caber and played some more.

“It’s good stuff,” concluded Middleton. I think the crowd would agree.

Stevensville opens with a win

The Stevensville Yellowjackets opened their football season with a convincing win over the Columbia Falls Wildcats in Columbia Falls on Friday. Although his team wasn’t quite where he had hoped for them to be, first-year coach Hank Praast said it was nice to get the 41-20 win on the road.

The ‘Jackets dug themselves a hole early on and were down 20-6 in the first half before turning the game around. “We came out and stumbled all over. We didn’t do the things we’ve been working on,” said Praast.

After a couple of time outs, the young Stevensville team then got going. Praast said a defensive play by Josh Lords set the tone for the turnaround. Lords ran a Wildcat down from behind and stopped him at the three-yard line. The Stevensville defense held in the red zone, stopping a Columbia Falls score. The ‘Jackets then scored and the momentum swung their way.

After kicking off to the Wildcats, Jalen Pfau picked off a pass and returned it 55 yards for another ‘Jacket touchdown. Columbia Falls didn’t score again while Stevensville scored three more times.

“They came up with the play when we needed it,” said Praast. “The individual plays started it and then their teammates got the rest of it done.”

Lords scored the first touchdown on a seven-yard pass from Caleb Vance. Vance hit Tyler Murray from four yards out for the next score. After Pfau’s interception and touchdown, Vance called his own number for a 30-yard scoring run. Josh Haynes caught a 12-yard pass and Billy Andrews recovered a fumble in the end zone for the final two Yellowjacket touchdowns. Vance also had three PATs and a 2-point conversion run.

“A lot of our juniors and seniors haven’t played that much but they settled down, got into a groove and started having a lot of fun,” concluded Praast.

Stevensville will host the Ronan Chiefs on Friday night. Although the Chiefs are quite a bit bigger than the Yellowjackets, Praast said his team is quicker and faster. That game begins at 7 pm.

Fair rodeo on tap

The Ravalli County Fair Rodeo is one of the more important rodeos on the Northern Rodeo Association tour. The season began the last weekend of May and has had cowboys and cowgirls traipsing across Montana from Darby to Poplar and Eureka to Wibaux. With only the Hamilton, Helmville and Kalispell rodeos remaining, contestants are jockeying to earn the final spots for a trip to the finals. The junior events have $300 purses for each event and the adults will vie for the $2,000 added money in each of the events, making this one of the richest NRA rodeos in the state. A win here could propel a contestant from the bottom to the top of the standings with one good catch or ride.

There are a few local cowboys who are in the top 15 in the standings and could move up in the standings. Bridger Chambers of Stevensville is setting in 14th place in steer wrestling according to the unofficial standings on the NRA website. He has earned $1,403.23 this year in steer wrestling.

The father/son team of Tim Chadwick and Grey Chadwick of Corvallis are doing well this year in team roping. Tim Chadwick is sitting in 14th place in the heading standings with $1,183.65 earned. Son Grey is in 14th place in the heeling standings with $1,103.56. Randy Sacks is in sixth place in the rookie heading standings.

Brandon Yerian is sitting in second place in the junior break away standings. This Corvallis youth has won $1,446.72 this year. Victor’s Ryanne Tracey is in 15th with $163.20.

The rodeo at the fair is always well attended and offers some of the best livestock around. Dick and Teri Jo Lyman of Jacobs Livestock and Rodeo produce the rodeo. Based out of Great Falls, this family run business puts on a show that is sure to please both old and new fans of rodeo.

The rodeo performances are scheduled for Friday and Saturday night this year. The fun begins at 7 pm both nights. Slack will be held Friday morning at 8 a.m.
