Lady Pirates play tough despite loss

The score did not reflect the effort in Victor on Thursday night when the Lady Pirates welcomed the Drummond Trojans in 13C volleyball action. Although Drummond won in three games, the Victor team showed marked improvement from last year’s team.

First-year coach Elaine Lewis was very pleased with her team’s play. She said the goal of the game was to play with intensity and continue playing until the ball hit the floor.

“They (Drummond) are intimidating. The girls played every point, I’m happy with that.”

With only one senior on the floor right now, and no player over 5’8”, the smaller Victor team had to rely on toughness at the net. Katy Brittle, a 5’3” sophomore had a block at the net.

“That was impressive,” said Lewis. “My 5’3” middle hitter and she actually had a block.”

Liz Taylor had two kills and five aces for the Lady Pirates.

Tigers trample Morning Stars

The Darby Tigers took advantage of turnovers and kept their focus on the game en route to a 44-0 win at Homecoming in Darby. The Tigers scored their first touchdown just three minutes into the game when lineman Sterling Kim picked up a Lame Deer fumble in the end zone. Dalton Roundy caught a pass from Jeremy Campbell for the two-point conversion and the rout was on. Darby’s defense also scored a safety in the fourth quarter when they tackled the Lame Deer quarterback in the end zone.

Roundy caught a 30-yard pass from Aaron Johnston for the first offensive score of the game. Campbell had a one-yard plunge for a TD. Matt Smith, who just returned after being injured, ran four yards for six points. Tanner Evers had a five-yard scoring run and Colton Johnston rounded out the scoring with a 22-yard run.

“The kids came to play today,” said coach Nate Olson. “It’s exciting. They’ve worked hard the last three weeks. And you couldn’t ask for a better group of kids.”

Coach Olson gave all of his players some time on the field. He switched out Campbell and Aaron Johnston at quarterback to give the younger Campbell some more playing time. Although Lame Deer fielded a few big players, the Tigers stayed low and focused on getting under the player to make the tackle.

“It’s a good opportunity to try and use some of these young kids in other positions and start building for later games.”

“I hear a lot of talk in the community that Darby doesn’t know how to win,” said senior Tanner Evers. “I hope this turns it around for us and the rest of the season as well. It feels great.”

Florence also won another game. They defeated Three Forks, 38-0. Kendall Cotton had two touchdowns. Zach Newbary, Riley Philips, Tanner Cobbs and Zach Damron also had touchdowns in the non-conference game.

Victor defeated Seeley-Swan, 46-8, in conference action. Kurt Manely had a four-yard run to open the scoring for the Pirates. He also passed for two touchdowns; one pass to Tyler Coorough from nine yards out and another to Jacob Smith from 20 yards out. Chris Morrizumi had a two-yard touchdown run and then intercepted a Blackhawk pass for a 14-yard touchdown return. Manely and Morrizumi each had a two-point conversion.

Hamilton lost a heartbreaker to Polson. Hamilton got on the board with an 18-yard field goal by Seth Mason. After leading the entire game, the Broncs were unable to stop Polson quarterback Vince Digiallanardo on a keeper play from three yards out to give Polson the lead. Polson’s Will Davey intercepted and ran back a Bronc pass to make the final score, Polson 14, Hamilton 3.
