Soccer - Stevensville boys, Hamilton girls win in Stevensville

The Stevensville boy’s soccer team topped valley rival Hamilton in a close match on Saturday in Stevensville. With confidence in their steps, the Yellowjackets slowly wore a younger Hamilton team down.

“We knew what they had coming back (this year),” said coach Ralph Serrette.

The mental preparation, a lot of communicating on the field, and a speedy kick by Eric Depee off a Christian Proud assist proved to be the difference in the 1-0 game. That was the only goal of the game, although both teams made numerous attempts.

“Marshal Glunt,” said Serrette of his player, “is a good goal keeper. I think he’s the best in the league but other people would argue that.”

Although Glunt had seven saves for the ‘Jackets, freshman Nash Johnson of Hamilton did his job in the goal as well. Sporting gloves that made his hands look like flyswatters, Johnson had six saves for the Broncs.

Hamilton coach Randy Lint felt his team played better than the score indicated. “I didn’t feel like we got outplayed. I was pretty happy with the effort of the players today.”

Hamilton has some veteran players out with injuries and had to have freshmen and sophomores step into those roles. “Three guys were playing their very first varsity game. We’re moving in the right direction.”

Hamilton took 16 shots on goal while Stevensville had 10. There were a total of 14 fouls in the physical game with Hamilton garnering five and Stevensville 9. Stevensville also had a yellow card.

The tables were turned for the girl’s game with Hamilton fielding a veteran team and Stevensville playing defense for almost the entire 80 minutes. The younger, more inexperienced Stevensville team stayed with Hamilton for most of the first half, although they were not able to make any runs for a goal. Hamilton only scored one in the first half when Maria Zepeda got a touch on a corner kick from Michelle Jones and scored the goal. But the Yellowjackets didn’t back down and continued charging passes and working hard to keep Hamilton off balance.

The second half, however, was a different story. Coach Gregg Schifflett said he talked about hustling and beating people to the ball. “Mostly it was just get out there and bust your rear end and beat people to the ball.”

The talk worked. Jones picked up a goal at the 61-minute mark. Then it was Zepeda again at 71 minutes when she scored an unassisted goal. Hamilton’s final goal was a Shenoa Weeks kick off a Zepeda assist. Final score, Hamilton 4, Stevensville 0.

“We had a couple of sophomores out there that were really hustling and they created some problems,” said Schifflett of Zepeda and Kelsey Brangoccio.

Although it was their second loss of the week, coach Kristin King was pleased with her team and their efforts. “They played good, straight up defense. I was pretty proud of them.”

Volleyball - Florence wins big over Eureka

The volleyball season got a jump start over the weekend with Florence and Victor taking part in early season tournaments and some Class A schools taking on tough opponents. Florence had three tough days with games at St. Ignatius, at home against Eureka and then again at St. Ignatius for a tournament.

The Lady Falcons came out strong against Eureka who traditionally has been a powerhouse in the north. Florence took the match in three games with a disciplined style of play that kept the Lions from getting into a rhythm.

“They are very disciplined,” said Kelly Daniels of her Lady Falcons. “That’s a choice they make. We can train them all we want but unless they decide to communicate well and stay within their assignments like they do at practice, there’s not much we can do about it.”

With Lindsey Bauck, Jo Johnston, and Katie Niemeir patrolling the net, the Florence team looks tough. When new-to-volleyball Odessa Conley steps to the net as well, look out. Although she’s never played high school volleyball, Conley is a presence at the net and alters shots. Bauck, Johnston and Niemeir are all tough hitters. Amanda Heffner is on the back row and proved herself Thursday night by notching 16 digs and four aces. Florence defeated Eureka in three sets, a feat that hasn’t happed for some time.

“I’m so pleased with their performance tonight,” said Daniels. “Eureka has a great coach and she has a wonderful team. It helps being at home. The crowd does a great job of keeping everyone energized.”

Florence finished second behind the Mission Bulldogs at the St. Ignatius tournament. The Lady Falcons defeated Troy, 20-9 and 20-6 in the first round. They then defeated Valley Christian 20-16 and 20-7 in the second round. Florence then moved on to stop Seeley-Swan, 20-15, and 20-4 before meeting the St. Ignatius team in the championship.

St. Ignatius stopped Florence 20-14 and 22-20 for the championship. The Lady Falcons then played Plains for second place and topped them, 20-11, 20-11.

The Lady Pirates came back to win the third game but couldn’t sustain the momentum. Hot Springs went on to win, 3-1. Victor was led by sophomore Taylor Ruark’s four aces, 23 digs and a block.

“They did look very good that third game,” said Megan Trowbridge of her Victor team. “We’re a very young team. I do have a good group of sophomores.”

Football roundup

Hamilton blasted Bigfork, 59-15, in a non-conference game in Hamilton. Led by Eric Brangoccio’s six touchdowns. Brangoccio rushed for 274 yards with his longest romp a 61-yard scoring run in the first quarter. Alan McCarty returned a kick for 78 yards for another Bronc touchdown after Bigfork’s Carson Sneed returned a Hamilton kick for 83 yards and six points. Paul Donaldson and Dillon Wood also had TD’s for the Broncs.

Corvallis notched their second win of the season on the road in Ronan, topping the Chiefs, 30-20. Drew Zeiler put the Blue Devils on the board with an 89-yard kickoff return in the first quarter. After two more Ronan touchdowns, the Blue Devil defense went to work stopping the play and the Devil offense got rolling. Rodee Anderson caught a 24-yard pass from Jordan Waldo. Shae Gingerich scored on a 43-yard interception and Waldo dashed three yards for the final score.

Stevensville lost to Livingston, 12-8. Stevensville scored in the third quarter when Logan Connors hit Ethan Pateman from eight yards out. Livingston scored twice in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Victor opened their season with a big win against a good team. The Pirates topped Alberton, 56-20, in eight-man action under the lights in Alberton. Gatlin Lamb hit Saxton Coorough with an 18-yard pass to put the Pirates on the scoreboard. Xavier Morigeau completed the series with a two-point conversion. Cody Burdett was Lamb’s next target, this time from 42 yards out. Morigeau made the two-point conversion good again. Alberton’s James Wemple caught a long pass from Cody Hoose for a Panther score but that didn’t slow Morigeau down. He came right back and scored six with a 75-yard kick off return and then completed the conversion. Morigeau had plunged seven yards for another Pirate TD with Coorough catching a pass from Lamb for the conversion. An interception by Alberton’s Hoose gave the Panthers another TD but again, the Pirates came right back. Cody Fishback pushed through from two yards out twice to add to the score. Morigeau completed the Pirate plunder with a five-yard run.

This Saturday is Homecoming in Victor. They will take on the defending state champions, Drummond. Drummond handed Victor their only two losses last year. However, last year’s Class C runner up, Sheridan, defeated Drummond last Friday night. The game is at 1 o’clock.

Florence lost to Thompson Falls, 13-6. The Falcons scored when Spencer Burnes hit Trevor Johnson for a 74-yard touchdown run.
