Kootenai Creek Fire Update Commissioners say no to impact feesBy Michael Howell People all over the state had their eyes on Ravalli County last week to see if the Corvallis School District would be the first school district in the state to institute impact fees on construction of new homes in the area to offset capital expenditures related to new growth. The law allowing for imposition of impact fees in a school district requires a unanimous vote of approval from the county commission. So things immediately looked bleak for proponents when Commission Chair Carlotta Grandstaff took a poll of commission members that showed three in favor and two against. In the end, one of those commissioners, Kathleen Driscoll, who showed her hand in favor of impact fees at the beginning, changed her mind and voted against the fees. The measure was defeated with Commissioners Grandstaff and Jim Rokosch voting in favor and Commissioners Greg Chilcott, J.R. Iman and Driscoll voting against. More... Florence School gets energy grantBy Michael Howell On Monday, the Montana Department of Commerce (DOC) announced it has awarded all of the $14.9 million available in Quick Start Energy Grants to pay for energy-saving improvements and studies at more than 100 schools throughout the state, and Florence is among the schools that will receive grant funds. This program is the result of proposed legislation to establish an energy-efficiency fund for K-12 schools introduced by Rep. Wanda Grinde (D-Billings) that ended up getting rolled into and passed under HB 645. More...
