Local young cowpokes advance
The Montana State Wrangler Junior High Rodeo was held in Hamilton on Friday and Saturday. The event featured cowboys and cowgirls from across Montana competing for a chance to go to the National Wrangler Finals in Gallop, New Mexico. The top four finishers in each event will have the chance to move on to New Mexico.
The junior high division of the National High School Rodeo Association was established in 2004 to serve as a development program for students interested in competing at the high school level. Events include barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, break away roping, tie down roping, team roping, ribbon roping, chute dogging, and junior bull riding. There are over 2,500 competitors across the United States and Canada and over 900 of them will be in New Mexico for the National Finals.
There were 42 rodeos in the Montana Wrangler Division Rodeo Association in the 2009/2010 school year. Student cowboys and cowgirls must maintain good grades in order to compete, just like the high school cowboys and cowgirls.
Victors Ryanne Tracy won the girls all around saddle at the state finals in Hamilton. She competed in junior barrel racing, goat tying, break away, pole bending, ribbon roping and team roping.
Joining Tracy in New Mexico will be Corvallis Brandon Yerian, Shelby Robinson of Stevensville and Lyndi Anderson of Florence. Yerian competes in all of the roping events as well as chute dogging. Robinson and Anderson compete in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying and breakaway roping.
