The Montana High School Rodeo Association held their state rodeo this weekend in Bozeman. The weather was cold and tough on the timed event contestants but the valley’s cowboys and cowgirls fared well.

Stephens of Corvallis won the boys all-around. The future University of Montana rodeo team member finished second in the steer wrestling and third in the cow cutting. His luck didn’t hold in the tie down roping and the team roping. But with the two top four finishes, he will advance to the National High School Finals in Gillette, Wyoming.

That rodeo will feature contestants from across the United States, Canada and even competitors from Australia. That rodeo is the third week of July. Those who finish from fifth place to 10th place in the state finals will compete at the Silver State Rodeo in Fallon, Nevada, July 5-9th.

Allison Darrow of Hamilton won the girl’s cutting. She came into the state rodeo leading the cutting. Darrow had a score of 71 in the first go around to take second. She scored a 74 to win the second go. Although she placed third in the short go, had accumulated enough points to easily win the girls cow cutting.

Kelsey Lemon of Corvallis went into the cutting in sixth place. Although she didn’t have the best go arounds at the state rodeo, she held on and finished in sixth place.

Lemon, who will rodeo for Howard College in Big Spring, Texas, next fall finished fourth in the pole bending.

Jeff Markette, another Blue Devil, finished fourth in the cow cutting and will make another appearance at the National Finals. He won the first go around at state.

Kelsey Trexler of Corvallis finished eighth in the barrels. She was 10th in the pole bending. Emma Edwards of Florence and her partner, Tyler Marr, finished second in the team roping for the year. Other local contestants were Jill Harris, Pirrie Harris, Briona Frick, Garrett McNeil and Reed Jenkins of Florence; Makenzie Melton and Raegan Tracy of Victor. Tracy and McNeil have earned the right to compete at Fallon. Tracy will compete in breakaway roping and McNeil in bull riding.
