Florence was the host at the Florence Invitational Track Meet at Big Sky on Friday. Deer Lodge took the boys championship with Hamilton coming in third. Hamilton's Nigel Neaves returned to the track with a victory in the 1,600. Teammate Brandon Drake came in second in that race but then turned around and won the 3,200. Darby's Noah Stout completed the valley sweep in the distance races by winning that race. Hamilton won the 1,600 relay. Victor's Michael Wemple picked up a win in the javelin with a throw of 161-7. Travis Schallenberger won the pole vault for Darby as well. Hamilton took the girls team scoring, followed by Darby. Michelle Jones won the 400 and Hamilton won the 1,600 relay. Britany Mitcham ran the fastest in the 3,200, claiming that win. Saturday found Corvallis and Darby at the CTA/Smurfitt Stone Invitational and Victor at the Whitefish A.R.M. meet. Victor's Amanda Burrington finished second in the 100 hurdles and won the 300 hurdles in the tough class. Britany Mitcham was fourth in the 3,200 for the Pirates. The numbers were down somewhat at the Smurfitt-Stone Meet in Frenchtown but that didn't stop Jesse Potter. The Stevi junior claimed victories in the 400, the long jump and the triple jump. He was second in the 800, a race he normally doesn't run. Another 'Jacket, Nick Flemmer, won the javelin and his cousin Jason, finished third. Chase Gregr of Corvallis broke the tape first in the 100 meters. Corvallis' Ashlee DellaSilva was a triple winner, taking the 100 and 200 and then anchoring the 400 relay. Sunni Bleibtrey won the triple jump for the Devils. Tara Ray and Kara DeWalt each had two wins for Darby. Ray took both the 100 and the 300 hurdles while DeWalt won the 1,600 and 3,200, setting a meet record in that event. Missy DeWalt, also of Darby, won the long jump. Girls Team scores: Frenchtown 126, Corvallis 124, Polson 102, Darby 74, Bigfork 48, Thompson Falls 30, Stevensville 14, Valley Christian 6 Frenchtown softball invitational heldTeams from across Western Montana converged on the Frenchtown Softball Complex Friday and Saturday for their annual tournament. Hamilton, Corvallis, Stevensville and Florence all competed. Although no champion is declared in this tournament, the chance to compete against teams that aren't normally on a team's schedule makes this one of the best tournaments around. Hamilton opened their play against the Libby Loggers. The Hamilton bats were hot as the Lady Broncs hit three home runs to take a 10-6 victory. Rachell Wood, Kelly Berk and Tara Anderson all had home runs. Berk had three RBIs, Wood had two and Anderson one in the game. Amanda Hood was 2-for-2 at bat and Wood and Cierra Smith were 2-for-4 at bat. Smith had a double in the game also. Hamilton's next game was against the Loyola Breakers. Although Loyola is a Class B school, they are a very tough team and the Lady Broncs found this out in a hurry. After scoring a run in the third inning, Loyola was held scoreless in the next three innings. Hamilton's Jessica Huseby got the offense going with a home run. Huseby finished with two RBIs in the game. Berk also had an RBI in the 4-3 victory for Hamilton. Nicki Koning pitched her second game of the day for the Lady Broncs and notched her seventh win. Thompson Falls was next on the Lady Broncs' list. The Class B runner up from last year's state tournament ran into a wall with Hamilton. With Koning on the rubber, the defense was set. With Huseby in the batter's box, the offense was set. Huseby went 3-for-5 at bat and had a home run along with four RBIs. Hood had a double and an RBI and was 1-for-4. Berk and Sarah Callaghan also had RBIs. Hamilton's last game was against Whitefish. The game ended after four innings when the 10 run rule was evoked. Hamilton won, 17-0. Five players for Hamilton hit a double. Huseby hit two doubles while Krueger, Wood, Callaghan, Smith and Koning each hit one. Smiley Marsh, a freshman, pitched a complete game and only allowed three hits. Corvallis had a tough day on Friday, losing to Thompson Falls and Libby. The Blue Devils had an early lead but the Bluehawks came back strong in the seventh inning to force an extra inning. Alysha Trammel of Thompson Falls scored in the eighth inning after starting on second base according to the international tie breaker rules to give Thompson Falls the 5-4 win. Ashley Gates had a double and two RBIs for the Blue Devils. Jenna Tintzman and pitcher Kasie Conder each had an RBI for Corvallis. Corvallis fell to Libby, 8-2, also on Friday. Saturday, Corvallis rallied and topped Whitefish, 19-0. Carmen Burdetee had two RBIs and was 3-for-5. Also adding RBIs for Corvallis was Jalene Swanson and Ashley Gates who had four RBIs. Corvallis' final game was against Florence. After battling to a 2-all tie at the end of seven innings, the game was forced into an extra inning. Aly Henderson started the inning on second base according to tie-breaker rules. After two walks by Corvallis, Falcon Kayla Schmid stepped up and smacked one over second base to score Henderson and take the game. Burdette and Swanson each had a double, with Swanson adding an RBI for Corvallis. Kate Street had a triple for Florence and an RBI while Schmid had two RBIs. Conder was pitching for Corvallis. Street pitched seven innings for Florence and was relieved by Henderson in the final frame. Florence defeated the Polson JV team, 12-2, on Friday. Henderson had a double and a home run in that game along with four RBIs. Erin Greenberg and Laura Hanks each added and RBI. Florence also defeated the tough Butte Central Maroons, 9-2. Street only allowed three hits by Butte Central. April Isbell was 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Henderson went 3-for-5 and Schmid was 2-for-3. Florence stopped Anaconda, 8-0. Henderson had a home run and a triple to lead the Falcons. She had five RBIs in the game. Greenberg also had an RBI. Street pitched the no-hitter and had six strike-outs in the game. |
