Florence and Darby bring home trophies

Individual wins by Niemeir, Johnston and Garbett powered Florence and Darby to trophies at the district track meet.

The Florence girls powered by Katie Niemeir’s four individual wins brought home the District 6B team trophy on Saturday. Florence finished the meet with 133 points. Darby was second with 123.5 points. The top six placers in each event will compete this weekend at the Western B Divisional at Dornblaser Field in Missoula.

Niemeir set three district track meet records and ran a leg of the winning 400 relay as well. The soon-to-be MSU Bobcat ran the 100 hurdles in 15.06, which beat the 1999 record of Anna Keller of Valley Christian. Niemeir clocked a 44.70 in the 300 hurdles, breaking another Keller record. Her final record-breaking event was the 400 meters, a race she doesn’t run that much. She broke the tape with a time of 59.51, unofficially the second fastest time in Class B in the state. Niemeir also won the 200.

Another Niemeir is also making herself known on the track. Anna Niemeir, a freshman at Florence and Katie’s younger sister, took first in the 100 with a time of 13.36. She was second in the 200 and also ran a leg on the 400-relay team.

Aaron Johnston crosses the finish line in the 200 at the 6B district track meet. He had wins in the 200, 400 and the long jump and will compete this weekend at the Western B Divisional in Missoula. Jean Schurman photo.

Mariah Mittman was the final Falcon girl to win an event. She cleared the bar at 5 feet in the high jump. Mittman was third in the triple jump with a leap of 31-11-1/4.

There were several Falcons who placed high enough to qualify for the divisional track meet this weekend. Abby Mytty was second in the 1,600 and finished second in the 3,200 also. Shelby Fisk was second in the 100, fourth in the 200 and ran a leg of the 400 relay. Taryn Rylander qualified in the 400, taking sixth in that event.

Darby was led by Heather Demorest who took the top spot in the 800, the 1,600 and the 3,200. She had a time of 2:25.27, unofficially the second fastest Class B time in the state. Her time of 5:19.24 in the 1,600 is the fastest Class B time. She was three seconds off her fastest time in the 3,200 with a time of 11:53.17. Rachel Wetzsteon of Darby was first in the triple jump with a hop, skip and leap of 33 feet, 11 and ? inches. She was second in the long jump. Wetzsteon finished third in the 300 hurdles as well.

Mariah Cress, who was expected to take the javelin, slipped on her first try and couldn’t overcome the slippery approach to the javelin throw. She finished second in that event. Cress was third in the discus and second in the shot put.

“It’s unfortunate that the grounds here at Big Sky were flooded and didn’t give the athletes their best chance,” said coach Steve Gideon. There was mud at the javelin throw and the front stretch of the track had about two inches of water standing just off the ashphalt.

Sarah Jakober will also compete again next week. She finished third in the long jump and the 300 hurdles. Alexandra Bronk tied for fourth in the pole vault. Keri Ledford finished third in the 800, the 1,600 and the 3,200. Cheyenne Oliver was sixth in the 1,600 and fourth in the 3,200 and was sixth in the high jump.

The Darby boys won the team scoring, outdistancing Loyola by 34 points. They were powered by seven individual wins by Seth Garbett and Aaron Johnston.

Seth Garbett took all three distance races. He won the 800 with a time of 2:02.38, the unofficial fastest time by a Class B competitor. Garbett’s time of 4:30.05 was nine seconds faster than second place which was teammate Matt Stout. It stands as the second fastest time in all classes right now. Doug Raymer of Darby was third and Sean Abrahamsen was sixth. Garbett finished the 3,200 in 10:04.52.

Stout, who Gideon said was dealing with the flu on Saturday, finished second in the 800 and third in the 3,200 as well. Raymer, a freshman, was third in the 800 and fifth in the 3,200. Abrahamsen finished second in the 3,200.

Aaron Johnston also had a stellar day for the Tigers. He won the 100 with a time of 11.80. He took first in the 200 with 23.91 and won the 400 with a time of 52.18. Johnston also won the long jump and ran on the second place 1,600-relay team.

Andy Walters finished third in the shot put and the discus. Ben Robbins was third in the long jump and the triple jump. John Pyles finished sixth in the 200 and fourth in the long jump. Nicholas Mormanick was fifth in the shot put. Both Darby relay teams qualified.

Florence finished in fourth with 64 points. Reed Jenkins took first in the triple jump with an effort of 40 feet, 3 and ? inches. Alex Mitchell won the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 2 inches.

Also qualifying for the Falcons were Zac Haskell in the 100 and discus; Brandon Lorensen in the 400 and triple jump; Zac Newbary in the 800 and 1,600; Ross Mangun in the long jump and triple jump; Reid Baerlocher in the long jump and triple jump; and Chris Benson in the 800.

Class A schools will compete this weekend in Anaconda at the Southwest A Divisional.
