Squire, Manely set top marks at Missoula County Invitational

The Missoula County Invitational is one of the largest and most competitive track meets of the season. This year 18 teams competed in the boys division and 17 teams in the girls. There was a cross-section of teams ranging from Coeur d’Alene and Great Falls Russell to Victor and Darby. Kalispell Glacier won the boys team scoring and Coeur d’Alene won the girls team scoring.

Several local athletes had stellar days and set some new top marks in the state. Paige Squire of Corvallis won both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Her times in each event also set the mark in the state at this time. She had a time of 14.51 in the 100 hurdles which is a second faster than any other mark in the state according to montanatrack.com.* Her 300 meter hurdles time was 44.20, two seconds faster than any other time in the state. It was also a meet record. *These are reported times and are not state records.

Victor’s Kurt Manely launched the javelin 189 feet, 11 inches, almost four feet farther than his best effort to date. He leads all marks in the state. Doug Raymer of Darby blasted out his competition in the 800 with a blistering 1:56.53. He was three seconds faster than Colby Henderson of Corvallis who placed second.

While the rest of the valley’s teams were at Missoula, Florence took a partial team to Bigfork for their invitational. Some of the team was also involved in the District Music Festival so they didn’t compete in track this weekend.

Cut Bank won the girls scoring with 163 points. Florence finished with 6.5 points. They took sixth in the 400 relay. Rosie O’Brien was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 98 feet. Loyola’s Kiernan Haggarty won the event with a throw of 139 feet. Callie Hunt finished fifth in the high jump with a leap of 4’6”. She was fifth in the triple jump with an effort of 31’3 ?”

The Florence boys finished with 48 points in the 16-team field. Columbia Falls won with 148 ? points. Brady Blomquist finished fifth in the 200. Dylan Reynolds was third in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Damon Ward was third in the javelin with a throw of 149-5, about 7 feet behind Jake Tudahl of Glacier. Ward was also third in the shot put with 43 feet and third in the discus with 117’4”. Reed Jenkins finished third in the triple jump.

Polson tops Hamilton on the diamond

The Hamilton Broncs ran into a very tough Polson team Thursday on the softball diamond. Polson, the defending state champion, is very solid, makes few mistakes and takes advantage of errors. They cruised to a 12-1 non conference win.

Polson scored three runs in the first inning and then took advantage of a couple of mistakes in the third and fourth innings to pad the win. .

“Our defense, we’re really solid and then something happens,” said Hamilton coach Melodee Mildenberger. “We’re in it and then we have that one inning.”

Mildenberger commended her team, saying they hit the ball well. “I liked that we were hitting the ball and not striking out. But they (Polson) filled the gap every time.”

Mildenberger was pleased with Rebecka Hood’s pitching in the game and said she has been throwing very well this season. With an extra three feet added to the distance between the catcher and the pitcher, some pitchers have struggled with their fast balls and control, but not Hood.

“It’s a little tough, but it gives me a lot more room to actually throw my pitches,” said Hood. “My rise ball actually rises and curve balls actually curve. I’ve always had the speed but not the accuracy so it helps. I like it.”

Hamilton scored when Rebecca Lyons cracked a long shot down right field and drove Presley Chadwick in for the run. Lyons went 1-for-2 as did Chadwick. Freshman Valerie Tayler also was 1-for-2. Mildenberger said the freshman has really stepped up her hitting as the season has progressed.
