Dan Shepherd and some of his crew from Grizzly Hackle in Missoula will be showing off all the latest, including some brand new driftboats. You might be surprised to learn that some of the newest gear is from the oldest company Hardy Brothers. Dan will also be showing a new video of fishing in Argentina. This will be the last meeting until next fall, so come find out how others are doing fishing the skwala hatch. Back Country HorsemenSpring is here and Bitter Root Back Country Horsemen are gearing up for the upcoming trail maintenance and riding season. Guest speaker for the April meeting is Melissa Maggio, Noxious Weed Education Coordinator for Ravalli County Weed District. She will give a 20-minute presentaion on Plants Toxic to Horses with a question and answer period following. The meeting will be held Thursday, April 21 in the Corvallis School cafeteria. A potluck dinner starts at 6:30 p.m. with the general meeting beginning at 7:00. Stevensville Methodist Holy WeekCelebrate and reflect on the last week of Jesus life. The Stevensville United Methodist Church will be holding a Maundy Thursday service on April 21 at 7 p.m. to commemorate Christs Last Supper. A light meal consisting of bread, olive oil, boiled eggs, grapes, and juice, symbolic of the Seder meal, will be served in candlelight in the Fellowship Hall, and will close with Holy Communion. A Good Friday service will be held on April 22 at 7 p.m. and will be a service of darkness (tenebrae) in preparation for the resurrection of the light on Sunday morning. Easter sunrise service will be held on April 24 at 7 a.m. on the church lawn, followed by an Easter breakfast beginning at 8 a.m. An egg hunt for the children will take place at 9:15 a.m. The traditional Easter worship will begin at 10:15 a.m. All are welcome at any or all of these Holy Week events. Our Savior Lutheran Holy WeekOur Savior Lutheran Church of Stevensville welcomes members of the community to participate in worship at this holiest time of the Christian year. Holy Week observances begin on Thursday, April 21 at 7 p.m. with Maundy Thursday Divine Service. The Good Friday Service of Vespers will be held also at 7 p.m. on the 22nd. Celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord begins with a sunrise service at 6:30 a.m. on Easter, April 24. Following at approximately 7:45 a.m., the traditional Easter breakfast will be cooked and served by the men of the congregation. Proceeds raised from the breakfast freewill offering will be pledged to local, state and international missions. Children should be ready for the egg hunt by 8:45 a.m. The adult class will meet at approximately 9 a.m., with the Easter Festival Service beginning at 10 a.m. Holy Communion will be celebrated at both services. Our Savior, affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, is located at 184 Pine Hollow Road. One mile south of the intersection of Middle Burnt Fork Road and the Eastside Highway, turn east on Pine Hollow, cross the tracks and the canal. The church will be on your left, marked by the three crosses of Easter.
Film showingThe Bitterroot National Forest, GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals and the Natural History Council of the Ravalli County Museum will present a screening of Green Fire, Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for our Time on Thursday, April 21 at 7 p.m. at GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, 553 Old Corvallis Road, Hamilton. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The film has a 1:45 minute run time. The event is free to the public. Green Fire highlights Leopolds extraordinary career, tracing how he shaped and influenced the modern environmental movement. Leopold books will be available for purchase. Special introduction to the film will be given by Chief Emeritus Jack Ward Thomas who appears in the film and was widely respected during his career for his straight talk and emphasis on ecosystem management.

Beta Sigma Phi tulip saleThe Bitterroot Chapters of Beta Sigma Phi will be holding their annual Tulip Flower Sale on Good Friday, April 22, beginning at 10 a.m. The proceeds this year will be donated to the local food banks, Haven House, Pantry Partners and Darby Bread Box, where the money will be used to purchase food from the local grocers. The tulips will sell for $7 for a bunch of 10 and can be purchased from members in front of Ravalli County Bank in Hamilton, Farmers State Bank in Victor and Rocky Mountain Bank in Stevensville and at various other locations in Hamilton, Victor, and Stevensville. Look for members selling tulips near the post offices, banks, grocery stores or on street corners all up and down the valley. South Valley Pachyderm ClubGlenn Kimble will be speaking on the subject, "Tomorrow's Energy, Today," with a short video and a few photos at the next meeting of the South Valley Pachyderm Club, on Friday, April 22 at 12 noon at BJ's Restaurant, 900 N. 1st Street, Hamilton. Kimball is currently Vice President and Events Chairman for the South Valley Pachyderm Club. A retired electrical engineer and former corporate technical executive, he now authors educational commentaries on the subjects of emerging technologies and alternative energy. Horsemanship clinicBitterroot Back Country Horsemen invites the public to a free defensive horsemanship safety class on Saturday, April 23. Using members stock for demonstration, participants will review different aspects of safe handling of stock for trail riding and trail work projects in the backcountry. This is a required training class for BBCH members who intend to use stock on USFS volunteer work projects. The public is encouraged to attend and learn more about what BBCH does for our local trails and to share in the safety training. Stevi farmers market meetingThere will be a meeting Saturday, April 23 at 9 a.m. at the Stevensville Main Street Association office to determine this years farmers market start date, rules, etc. Thera Williams has graciously offered to be this years Market Master. Discussion items include insurance, Main Street membership dues, and location of the market. Vendors should be prepared to pre-pay for the season to help defray costs. Stevi Easter Egg HuntAmerican Legion Post 94 will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Lewis & Clark Park in Stevensville for ages 0 to 12. The park will be divided into four age groups. 120 dozen eggs will be hidden. Special prizes will be awarded to those who find a gold or silver egg.
Gardens & Local Foods celebrationCelebrate Earth Day with the Rocky Mountain Grange, Bitterroot Food Co-op, and Sustainable Living Systems at the "The Spring Celebration of Gardens & Local Foods" on Saturday, April 23 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Rocky Mountain Grange. A full afternoon of speakers and events begins at 2 p.m. with educational forums presented by community gardeners and garden experts who will share their knowledge and experience. Local food producers will showcase their products; civic organizations will provide information on their various food projects. Keynote speaker Jeremy N. Smith, Missoula-based author of "Growing a Garden City," will speak at 3:30 p.m. on the benefits of community gardens and local foods. Square dance clubBoots n Calico Square Dance Club will hold a workshop and dance on Saturday, April 23 at the Hamilton Senior Center, 820 N. 4th. The plus workshop will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. followed by an Easter Dance until 9:30 p.m. The dance level will be mainstream with plus tips inserted about every third dance. She also served as a former law clerk for Judge Langton, moot court at UM law school and is mother of two preteens. Dave Stenerson will be speaking about "Criminal Matters." He is Regional Deputy Public Defender for Region 2, and received the Outstanding Public Defender Award (2010). He is a former newspaper editor and Navy veteran (Silver Star, Purple Heart). MWA gatheringThe Montana Wilderness Association will hold its annual gathering Friday and Saturday, April 29-30 in Gallatin Gateway at the Gallatin Gateway Inn. The theme, Wilderness Communities: Working to Keep it Wild, will focus on hearing from Quiet Trail users and grassroots protection efforts for the Gallatin Range. The Friday evening kickoff will include a social hour, BBQ buffet dinner, a special tribute to Walkin Jim Stoltz, and live entertainment provided by the Prairie Wind Jammers. Saturday offers a full day of outdoor and indoor activities; participants will enjoy a Wilderness Walk to Storm Castle, Wilderness First Aid Workshop, Wilderness and Wildlife photography workshop, a panel discussion about the Gallatin Range, a live auction, banquet dinner, display tables, and much more! Professional climber, Conrad Anker of Bozeman, is the keynote speaker. Teller Earth Day celebrationJoin The Teller to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 30. Volunteer stewardship projects will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 12 noon. Plan to arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. at The Tellers Slack Barn. A light breakfast will be provided. Projects will include an upland woody vegetation planting, houndstongue weed dig, debris removal and landscape maintenance. Volunteers must sign up for projects by Friday, April 22. Stevi community cleanupThe annual Community Cleanup Day will be held in downtown Stevensville on Saturday, May 7. Volunteers should meet at the Stevensville Main Street Association office at 9 a.m. for job assignment. Activities will include sweeping and bagging debris, gardening and more. Lunch will be provided for all volunteers. The event is sponsored by the Stevensville Civic Club and the Stevensville Main Street Association. In conjunction with this event the Town of Stevensville will be picking up yard debris the week of May 2-6. Leave unbagged yard debris on the street curb or in the alleys. Farmers Market May Day FestivalHamilton Farmers Market opens its 19th season on Saturday, May 7 at 9 a.m. with a wild May Day Festival for the kids! Local day schools and kids programs will offer a variety of childrens activities. The Green Man parade for fairies and woodland creatures of all ages and sizes will start at 11:15. Parade forms on Bedford Street just west of the intersection with Third Street. Maypole dances will return. Hamilton Farmers Market continues to grow with new local craft, produce and hot food vendors on to Third and Second Streets. Tacos, more tasty burritos and even tastier baked items, along with more great coffee and other hot and cold drinks, can be found throughout the Market and in the new Food Court growing on Second Street. UM science adventure campRegistration is now open for MOLLI Summer Adventures in Science: Connecting the Circle, a summer camp for children ages 6 through 12 and their grandparents hosted by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at The University of Montana. The science day camp will run Monday and Tuesday, July 18-19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Participants will learn from one another in scientific exploration through classroom and field experiences, starting with the Mr. G Science Show with Glenn Govertsen, who has taught physics at Missoulas Sentinel High School for more than 30 years and is a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. Mens Bereavement BreakfastMarcus Daly Hospice sponsors a monthly Mens Bereavement Support Breakfast on the second and fourth Friday of each month at 9 a.m. in the Marcus Daly Hospice Dining Room. This is a special opportunity for men coping with the loss of a spouse or loved one to gather and share their journey of healing. Informal discussions are led by a trained Bereavement Facilitator and cover topics such as, embracing our grief, personal growth, forming new relationships, and more. Mindful Recovery support groupA peer-directed support group meets Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. at the Bison Internet Café, 164 S. 3rd in Hamilton. People in recovery from mental illness and/or substance abuse or addiction can find support and mentor help from group participants. All interested persons are invited to attend. Darby Library story timeReading to young children helps develop good reading skills while igniting their imaginations. The Darby Community Public Library offers two Preschool Story Times every Monday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. All children from age one to five are welcome to come with a caregiver for interactive stories, games, songs, and fun activities that focus on letter and number recognition, and the joy of reading.
Acoustic music jam sessionsEveryone is invited to the music jam sessions at the Rocky Mountain Grange Hall south of Hamilton each Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. Players of all levels are invited to bring their guitars, mandolins, harmonicas, fiddles, bass fiddles, banjos, dobros, or other acoustic instruments. Music ranges from old-time country to western, to swing, to blues, to whatever. There is no charge for admission. You dont have to be a musician to attend. Folks who just want to listen are encouraged to come its always more fun with an audience. The Grange Hall is located at 1436 S. 1st Street (Hwy 93), just south of the Valley Pet Clinic. Open season ridingOpen season riding has started at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds. Come in and sign up for the season or on a single ride basis. The individual memberships are $30; family memberships are $50; and single ride option is $5. The fairgrounds are open daily, and the season will run from now until the fall, weather permitting.
