Concerns aired over Stevensville Town budget, hiring snafu

Stevensville Town Councilor Clayton Floyd told his fellow council members last Monday night that he has some grave concerns about the town’s budget. He said that 47 line items in the budget were near, at, or over 100 percent of their budget with two months still left in the current fiscal year. Metcalf Refuge improves wood duck nesting. On Wednesday, April 1, sixteen new cedar wood duck nesting boxes were put in place by members of Friends of the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge. The boxes replace the original plywood or tin structures that were in need of repair or removal. The project was spearheaded by Friends volunteers Jim Hamilton, Paul Hayes and Bob Hoy with assistance from Refuge staff. They monitored previous use of the old boxes by observing eggs and down feathers found during the annual box clean out. Getting wood ducks to nest on the refuge has been difficult because of the scarcity of hardwood trees, which they prefer. A similar project is being undertaken at Teller Wildlife Refuge, where Jim Hamilton also volunteers.

Other projects the Friends are undertaking include construction of an outdoor education classroom/shelter; a Bio-Blitz field exercise in June and an ongoing Burnt Fork stream project to improve flow through the refuge. County and school settle over vaccine costs

Ravalli County Commissioners met with Stevensville School District Superintendent Kent Kultgen, Linda Coombs from the Montana Municipal Insurance Authority (MMIA) and Shawn Bubb from the Montana School Groups Insurance Authority (MSGIA) last Monday and hammered out an agreement as to how much the school’s insurance pool would pay for the rabies vaccine used to immunize students and teachers who were exposed to a rabid bat brought into the Stevensville School by a visiting parent last fall. Marley Sheridan, 5, claims her special prize that resulted from finding one of the eight gold or silver eggs hidden amng the 90 dozen effs in Lewis & Clark Park at last Saturday's Easter Egg Hunt. Other special prize winners included Dylan Gaviak, Alexis Marble, Allyah Anderson, Skyler Mickelson, Mary Jane Holmes, Skyler Wheeler, and David Damaske.
