Commissioners consider changes to governmentBy Michael Howell Ravalli County Commissioner Greg Chilcott placed the broad question of the structure of the local government before his fellow commissioners last week, asking them to consider “the development of an ad hoc advisory committee to research issues on the general structural options of the Ravalli County plan of government.” More...  A crowd of over 200 attended the annual Lincoln/Reagan Luncheon, held Saturday, February 26, at the Victor Steak House, sponsored by the Ravalli County Republican Central Committee. Republican candidates for 2012 spoke to the attendees. Three Certificates of Appreciation were handed out to termed out Representatives Ron Stoker and Ray Hawk, and Senator Rick Laible, thanking them for serving the people of Ravalli County. The first annual “Bob Thomas” Award was given to his wife, Jean Thomas, for the Republican of the Year. The crowd was brought to tears as Jean spoke. Her husband Bob is ill, and could not be there. A skit recreating Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi handing the gavel to Speaker John Boehner was performed. After committee business was taken care of, the candidates spoke. Meanwhile, picketers gathered outside the Lincoln/Reagan Luncheon, sponsored annually by the Ravalli County Republican Central Committee, to protest what the current Republican-dominated legislature is doing and not doing for the people of Montana, as they see it. Picketer Bill LaCroix said that the demonstration was not organized or sponsored by any organization. He said it came about by some individuals talking among themselves. He said that each picketer probably had his or her own emphasis, which could be read in their signs, “but I think most of us are of the same mind in that we are terribly disappointed in the abysmal performance of our legislature so far. They are pushing extremist issues and not doing the real work. We thought they ought to hear from us about it.” LaCroix’s sign addressed the issue of “nullification.” “They are invoking Lincoln’s name at the same time that their party’s legislature is pushing the concept of nullification of federal laws,” said LaCroix. “Lincoln was against nullification and it hasn’t been invoked since the Civil War. Commissioners consider Planning Board changesBy Michael Howell Last Wednesday, February 23, the Ravalli County Commissioners met to discuss and possibly decide on the future of “the structure, membership, function and necessity of the Planning Board.” The Planning Board is a twelve-member advisory board that works on reviewing and periodically making recommendations to change the county’s subdivision regulations as well as reviewing and making recommendations on subdivision applications themselves. The Planning Board works closely with the Planning Department staff. More...  County releases draft of updated subdivision regulationsOn March 2, the Ravalli County Planning Department will re-release the December 1, 2010 version of the Draft Ravalli County Subdivision Regulations. The release of the draft initiates a public comment period that is proposed to culminate with a June 30, 2011 public hearing at which updated Subdivision Regulations will be adopted. More...
