Business Succession Planning classAs part of its Building Bitterroot Business series of classes and seminars, the RCEDA is offering a seminar on succession planning on Friday, March 18 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Ravalli Entrepreneurship Center, 274 Old Corvallis Road, Suite A, Hamilton. This introduction to planning for the future of your business will be taught by Mike Tobiason, Vice President with Anderson Zurmuehlen, an accounting and business consulting firm with 200 employees and offices throughout Montana. Succession planning is a critical need in the Bitterroot Valley because many sole proprietorships and small businesses are owned by individuals or a small group of related individuals. Succession planning is the key component of strategic planning for family owned small businesses. Oftentimes when the owner reaches a turning point in their career due to age, finances, or loss of interest, the business simply closes because the owners neglected to plan for succession. Small business is the backbone of our community providing jobs, character and community pride. The community loses in two ways when an established business is sold for the liquidation value of its assets, the owner loses the money that could have been realized through the sale of a going concern and the community loses an employer and its services and expertise. This course will help you start thinking about you business strategically, from evaluating your present position to planning your exit strategy. Topics covered include evaluating your business and personal financial positions, setting goals and planning strategy, valuing your business, changing leadership while maintaining ownership, exiting from ownership, funding your retirement and more.
