Sports at a GlanceAll stories by Jean Schurman Stevensville splits with PolsonDarby finishes strong at Mission Mountain ClassicStevensville High School Academic All-StateStevensville splits with PolsonThe Stevensville Yellowjackets lost to Polson at home over the holiday weekend while the Lady Yellowjackets defeated the Lady Pirates of Polson. Stevensville came out playing tough in the girls game and had a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Polson gained a point by halftime but Stevensville buckled down on defense in the third quarter and only allowed five points for the Lady Pirates while scoring 14 themselves. Polson came on strongly in the fourth quarter and scored 24 points but it wasnt enough as the Lady Jackets defeated Polson, 52-47, in a non-conference game. Stevensville was led by freshman Alycia Sims who netted 18 points and seven rebounds. Blaire Brookshire added nine points and McKenzie Sebastian had eight. They were unable to overcome a 13-point difference in the third quarter and lost, 75-70. Stevensville trailed by only four points at the end of the first quarter. They kept with the Pirates in the second but just couldnt contain Polsons Kyle Bagnell who dropped in 30 points. The Jackets made a run in the fourth quarter and scored 34 points but time ran out before they could take the lead. Stevensville was led by Josh Schulz who also had 30 points with 24 of those on three-point baskets. Price Miller also had double figures with 16 points. The Lady Pirates of Victor picked up their first win of the season, topping Lincoln, 35-24. The first quarter proved to be the difference with Victor scoring 12 points and holding the Lady Lynx to only four points. McKenzie Melton had 12 points for Victor and Rachel Borowic added seven in the 13-c win. Victor 35, Lincoln 24. The Victor Pirates continued right where they left off at the Christmas break, defeating Lincoln, 42-29. After trailing at the half by three points, the Pirates took the lead at the end of the third quarter and extended their lead in the fourth. Matt McClintick led Victor with 13 points. Darby finishes strong at Mission Mountain ClassicThe Darby Tigers finished in third place at the Mission Mountain Classic in St. Ignatius on Saturday. Frenchtown won the tournament with 240 points. They were followed by Thompson Falls (140) and Darby with 99.5 points. There were 11 teams competing. Dalton Roundy took the championship at the 140-weight division with a 17-2 technical fall at 5:30 in the match over Dakota Matt of St. Ignatius. Darbys Tyler Weidiger finished in second place after losing to Roy Schutter at 98 pounds. In the consolation matches, J.T. Hamblen of Darby took a 7-4 decision over Thompson Falls Dalton Nelson at 105 pounds. At 125 pounds, Caleb Caicedo pinned Arlees Logan Leffer at 1:04 for third place. In the next weight division up, 130 pounds, Tanner Evers of Darby pinned Ashton Dierman of Eureka at 1:04. Michael Majors pinned Albert Plant of Arlee at 2:21 at the 140-weight division. Following him was Christian Hammersmith who pinned Keith Carmen of Frenchtown at 3:28. The Darby Invitational will be at the end of January and most of these wrestlers will have another chance at each other before moving into the district and divisional meets.
