Grief Support GroupsWhen you grieve the death of a loved one, you sometimes hide it so others think youre over your sorrow and loss. Marcus Daly Hospice offers an opportunity to share grieving experiences and grow from them. For the men in our community dealing with the death of a loved one, Marcus Daly Hospice offers a mens breakfast support group. The Mens Bereavement Support Breakfast meets at 9 a.m. every second and fourth Friday of the month in the Marcus Daly Hospice dining room. Breakfast is provided for a $3 donation per person. If you are a beginner or just a bit rusty, join the Stevi Spanish Conversation Group at the North Valley Public Library Wednesdays from 6 to 7 pm to brush up on your Spanish language skills. This is not a class to learn to speak Spanish. It will be an informal, weekly gathering to practice speaking the Spanish language. These informal meetings are for all veterans from the Boxer Rebellion to the present. Many veterans have both unresolved and resolved issues from their experiences in the military that impact their lives today. At the meetings veterans can discuss whatever they want and the outreach group gives veterans an opportunity to get together to share information and talk about issues. Vietnam Veterans of AmericaThe Bitterroot Chapter #938 of the Vietnam Veterans of America meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Human Resources Building, 316 North 3rd Street, Hamilton. Enter through the north door. Vietnam era veterans often need assistance with problems and issues and many have similar stories. The Bitterroot Chapter VVA is your organization to provide the opportunity to obtain and share information, to organize grass root activities, lend a helping hand, and offer assistance to all veterans in dealing with the Veterans Administration. Darby food collectionThe Darby Bread Box, a local food bank in Darby, will be opening January 4, 2010. Kiwanis seeking donationsThe Bitterroot Valley Kiwanis Club is once again filling food baskets for families in need in the Bitterroot Valley. For over 30 Bitterroot Valley Kiwanis has provided between 280-320 baskets to families for the holiday season. These baskets include food and essentials items for families. Holiday trains runningThe Bitterroot Valley Model Railroaders will be running their model train layout every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Christmas in the Kohl Building, right behind the Valley Drug store on Main street in Stevensville. Engineers" are needed, and members would be glad to teach grownups how to run everything on the layout from Thomas to Big Boy. It's a lot of fun and it's easy to master the art of the throttle. Hamilton Elks dinnerThe Hamilton Elks host a dinner open to the public every Wednesday night at the Hamilton Elks Lodge, 203 State Street. The menu is different each week and the cost is $8.00. Serving begins at 6 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Elks scholarship fund.
Suppertime at SVCFCSuppertime@SVCFC is a free community dinner for families and those needing a good, nutritious meal. Meals are served on Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. at South Valley Child and Family Center, 515 Madison in Hamilton. All meals are prepared in a professional kitchen by volunteers. Stevensville AwanaAwana kids club is a program for children ages 3 years-6th grade at First Baptist Church, 402 Church, Stevensville. It meets on Tuesdays after school from 4 to 5:30 p.m. during the school year. There are games, Bible stories, snacks and age appropriate curriculum. Lone Rock AwanaLone Rock Bible Church, 1142 Three Mile Creek Rd., Stevensville, invites all children from preschool (age 4) through sixth grade to come to Awana Club, every Wednesday through March 24, from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m. at the church. Awana is one of the largest nondenominational children's and youth ministries in the world, focused on spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ through the local church. MAC High School Youth GroupSix MAC (Montana Association of Churches) churches including Faith Lutheran, First Presbyterian, Corvallis United Methodist, United Methodist-American Baptist Federated, First Christian and St. Pauls Episcopal Church are sponsoring a community youth program for all high school students. The MAC youth group meets on Monday nights from 6 to 8:15 p.m. at the Carriage House located at 310 N. 4th Street, Hamilton. Dinner will be provided by the churches at 6:30 p.m. Music will start at 7 p.m. followed by a short message given by the ministers of the above churches, an activity, fellowship and more music will follow. MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) GroupFor over 35 years, MOPS has been creating authentic communities where young moms gather to experience encouragement, support and hope. But, it doesnt stop there. Through training and development customized to women in this stage of life, and through do-able service opportunities, MOPS grows moms to make a better world. Although mothering preschoolers is at times a lonely challenge, MOPS is providing a welcome break for moms; a chance for moms to make new friends, enjoy a relevant speaker, discussion time and snacks, and most importantly, an opportunity for moms to know they are not alone in the struggles and joys of raising young children. The new Bitterroot MOPS group meets at Lone Rock Bible Church, around the corner from Lone Rock School, just off Eastside Hwy, down Three Mile Creek Road, between Stevensville and Florence. SAFE Giving TreeSAFE is sponsoring its annual Christmas Giving Tree for Shelter, Transitional Housing, and Outreach residents through December 18. Each family has ornaments on the tree asking for Christmas gifts they cannot afford to provide for their families. Anyone who is interested in helping a family in need this holiday season is welcome to pick an ornament from the tree and return an unwrapped gift by December 18. The Giving Tree is located in Hamilton, at SAFE on First Thrift Store, behind the Bitterroot Verizon Store. Food for fines at North Valley LibraryThe North Valley Public Library is offering to waive overdue patron fines throughout the month of December in exchange for food to be donated to Pantry Partners Food Bank in Stevensville. The library staff encourages patrons to bring in non-perishable food and personal hygiene items to the front desk for fines to be waived. Last year the library collected 477 pounds of food which was donated to Pantry Partners and distributed to needy families in the community. Pantry Partners provides holiday dinner boxes and limited personal items to families in the Bitterroot Valley. St. Marys Mission Gift Shop hoursHistoric St. Mary's Mission Gift Shop in Stevensville will be open Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday's from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Christmas. Invited by the Salish Tribe, Historic St. Mary's Mission, founded in 1841, is the first Christian settlement in Montana. Gifts reflecting both cultures are available in the mission gift shop, with proceeds supporting the preservation and renovation of this important Montana icon.
Our Savior Lutheran Advent servicesAdvent services will be held Thursday, December 17 at 7 p.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church. To make it simple for hard-working families to come to worship, the ladies of the church will serve a soup and sandwich supper at 6 p.m. Stop and pick up your family on your way home from work to eat with the members of Our Savior before the service. Food and fellowship joined with the power of God's Word should make the holiday season more meaningful as well as less hectic. This Advent and Christmas season, Pastor David Carver will explore the theme of "Away in a Manger" as the prophecies of the Old Testament are fulfilled in the Gospels' declaration of God's love of His lost children. The proof? It's in the manger. Our Savior, located at 184 Pine Hollow Road, is affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. To find the church, head south from Stevensville on the Eastside Highway. One mile past Middle Burnt Fork Road, turn east on Pine Hollow. Cross the tracks and the canal, and the church will be on your left, marked by three crosses.
Lone Rock-Three Mile community extravaganzaA group of activities to recognize and celebrate the holidays is being planned for the Lone Rock-Three Mile community. Christmas caroling is being planned for Wednesday, December 16 and organizers would like to know if you would like carolers to come to your place or that of someone you know. Would you like to be part of the singing group? Everyone is encouraged to participate in these activities to spread the holiday spirit. On Friday, December 18, a holiday variety program will be held at the Lone Rock Bible Church. A dinner of soup, bread and dessert will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a fun evening of performances. Be a presenter or be a guest to share with all. Foreign film seriesThe Bitterroot Public Library is continuing its Celebrating Cultural Diversity Adult Foreign Film Series with a showing of the film, "The Country Teacher" on December 17. This is a beautiful and powerfully acted, profoundly moving story of desire, responsibility, forgiveness and the need to belong, from the internationally acclaimed Director Carlos Sorin. The showing is sponsored by the Annie Maclay Leffingwell Foundation. The film will be presented in the west meeting room of the Bitterroot Public Library. It is intended for mature audiences due to adult themes, language and sexual content. The showing is free.
Brown Bag It book discussionThe Bitterroot Public Library's "Brown Bag It" book discussion group meets December 17 from noon to 1 p.m. in the west meeting room of the library. The Valley Rhythm Boys will play music for dancing after the dinner. All members of all three bands, and their spouses, are guests at the dinner. There will be no dance on Friday, December 25. On Friday, January 1, dancing will be to recordings. The January business meeting will be held Wednesday, January 6 following the 12:30 potluck.

Daly Mansion Christmas PartySanta will be the guest of honor at the Daly Mansion's Community Christmas Party on Saturday, December 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This family celebration will include live holiday music, Christmas carol sing-a-longs, cookie decorating, crafting, and more. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at the Mansion from noon to 2 p.m. and children can visit and get their photos taken with Santa. Square dance clubBoots n Calico Square Dance Club will start a new dance lesson series and hold a Christmas dance on Saturday, December 19 at the Hamilton Senior Center, 820 N. 4th. A new beginners square dance class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. This is the night that people with no square dancing experience will be allowed to join the beginners class. Following the class the regular Christmas dance will be held. The entry fee for this dance will be $4.00 or a comparable (non perishable) food donation for Haven House. All the proceeds from the dance (money or food) will be donated to Haven House. The dance will be mainstream with plus tips. Rounds will be provided between tips. A Capella Society concertThe Montana A Cappella Society and Dolce Canto, Missoula's premier vocal group, will present a holiday concert, "Our Favorite Christmas," Saturday, December 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the Victor High School Performing Arts Center. Enjoy a concert of sparkling a cappella holiday music from two of Montana's extraordinary choral groups. Auditions for AnnieAuditions for the next Hamilton Players production the great Broadway musical "Annie" will be January 5-6 at 7 p.m. at the Hamilton Playhouse. There are roles available for men, women and children, ages 8 to 85. Auditions will be conducted by director Gina Wilson. The show will run Feb. 26-28, March 4-7 and March 11-14. Those interested in helping with other aspects of the production are welcome to attend the auditions.
Our Valley, Our Water educational forumOn Wednesday, January 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hamilton Middle School Auditorium, 209 S. 5th St., Hamilton, the Bitter Root Water Forum is hosting Dr. Mike Young, Team Leader and Research Fisheries Biologist for the Air, Water and Aquatic Environments Science Program of the USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station in Missoula to present Fishes, Water, and Fire in a Changing Climate: Causes and Consequences of Future Water Temperature Regimes. This is the third presentation in a four-part series entitled Our Valley, Our Water scheduled through March 2010 and offered by the Bitter Root Water Forum through funding from Montana Department of Environmental Quality. Dr. Young's presentation looks at early results from fieldwork in the East Fork Bitterroot River using water temperature, fire, and fishery population data. After-school theater classesThe second semester of Hamilton Playhouse after-school classes kicks off January 18. The classes are designed around age groups from 5 to 18, with separate classes for each age group. The lessons include almost every aspect of the theater experience, from backstage to performance. Registration forms are available at the Hamilton Players box office. Registration is $200 for the 16-week program. The students will have a performance showcase May 14 and 15.
Beginning beekeeping workshopMontana State University will present a beginning beekeeping workshop on Saturday, January 30. New beekeepers, including youth, can learn how to get started, first year management strategies and integrated pest management of honey bee pests and diseases. Participants will also learn about honey bee biology and beekeeping equipment. Presenters are from MSU, Western Bee Supplies of Polson, and the Montana Department of Agricultures Apiary Division. The workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and takes place at the Plant Bioscience Building room 108 on the MSU Campus in Bozeman. The cost is $20 for adults and $15 for children 18 and under. Registration is due by Jan. 20 and is limited to 50 people.
