It’s a great starting place and a pretty universal maxim. When we go beyond interpersonal relationships and look at social organization and making decisions, our nation has accepted democratically elected politicians who make decisions for all its citizens, like it or not. For some strange reason that I do not believe to be wise, most people accept this “social agreement” even though it violates the golden rule. You might ask, how does it violate the golden rule. The democratically elected gods of this nation of people determine the policies and rules you live by. If you are on the majority side, life seems good. If your chosen leader or policy is in the minority, you lose. This is a win-lose situation not my idea of how I want to be treated. The rules we live by today include taking your money like it or not for such things as war, universal health care, and other such things like it or not. Please help me understand why you accept this contradiction in our great society of living people.
The golden rule is not enough. We need a new way of doing things together, a way that does not violate basic social principles. Do not steal. Do not murder. It starts with your personal interactions and grows to a more beneficial and strong community. Let’s build community, not destroy it with division and violence.
