Football Stevi stops Vikings in season opener The Stevensville Yellowjackets opened their football season with a victory over Bigfork Friday night. The 'Jackets won, 14-7. "Our defense did some good things," said first-year coach Bob Connors. "But the defense is always ahead of the offense at this time of the year." The Yellowjacket defense forced four fumbles and snagged four interceptions in the non-conference game. The final fumble came with little more than a minute remaining in the game and the Vikings knocking at the door. Senior Tyson Johnson recovered the Bigfork fumble in the end zone and stopped the tying drive for Bigfork. Johnson also recovered the first fumble of the game and set up the offense for the 'Jackets' first touchdown. Ed Grinsell ran the ball from two yards out for that touchdown. Johnson kicked the extra point and the boys in black were on the scoreboard for the first time this season. Bigfork came back in the first quarter to tie the game when Ben Haugen raced seven yards for the touchdown. Casey Hanson kicked the extra point. Bigfork made several more runs but each time the Yellowjacket defense turned them back. Carson Curley, another senior, literally stole the ball out of a Bigfork receiver's hands not once but twice. "I heard the coach yelling go to the ball," said Curley. "I did and just went for the ball." Both times, the receiver had made the catch but the tenacious Curley didn't give up and kept his hands on the ball. Connors said he has stressed the importance of turnovers to the team. "Turnovers make a short field for the offense, and that's what we want. We did some good things on defense even though we got too smart early on in the game and ran some wrong tracks. The important thing is we made the adjustments and got back on track." Stevensville scored their second touchdown in the third quarter when Johnson kept the ball and slipped into the endzone from two yards out. Johnson again kicked the extra point. Stevensville will host Columbia Falls this Friday night in what will be a family affair. The Wildcats are coached by another first-year coach, Kevin Connors, cousin to Stevi's coach. "We'll swap tape but that's all I know about his team right now," said Connors. Columbia Falls also notched a win in their first game. They defeated Hamilton 14-13. Hamilton made a run in the fourth quarter but a missed PAT sealed the Broncs' fate. Columbia Falls scored in both the first and second quarters to give them the leg up. Tyler Jones caught a three-yard pass from Brad Bennet after Columbia Falls blocked a Hamilton punt. Cody Sheppard returned a 55-yard punt for the second touchdown. Chris Nagel was successful on both PATs. Hamilton scored when Todd Galbraith lunged into the end zone from two yards out. Ben Gannt kicked the PAT. Kevin Krasovich plunged through the line for the second Bronc touchdown. Corvallis downed Ronan, 48-10 in a non-conference drubbing Friday in Corvallis. Led by David Minnis' offensive onslaught of 132 yards rushing and 128 yards receiving, the Blue Devils scored early and often for the win. Minnis had two touchdowns from the air and two on the ground. Minnis took a 66-yard pass from Joe Nisly to open the scoring. Another pass from Minnis to Nisly, this time for 66 yards, gave the Blue Devils momentum. Minnis had two more touchdowns, one of 85 yards and the other of 32 yards to cap his performance. He also kicked three PATs. Corvallis' other touchdowns came when Mike West raced 12 yards to the goal line, an 83-yard run by Josh Augustine and a 19-yard run by Nisly. Drew Huls caught a pass from Nisly for the two-point conversion. Ronan scored once in the first quarter when Craig Rogers ran 37 yards for a touchdown. Matt Wirsiq kicked the PAT and then kicked a 28-yard field goad in the third quarter. Sean McKinney led the Blue Devils with 13 tackles. Huls snagged two interceptions and forced a fumble. Florence, under new coach Rich Phillips, picked up their first victory of the season. The Falcons defeated Arlee, 21-13, in a non-conference game. Florence scored first when Mark Ward raced 15 yards for the TD. Clay Schroeder took a two-yard pass from Mark's twin, Doug, for the second touchdown. The Warriors then rallied back and were within one point at the half. Mark Ward plunged one yard for the final Falcon touchdown. Clint Padgett kicked three-for-three PATs. Darby held on to defeat Troy, 10-6, in another non-conference game. "We almost gave it away," said head coach Loyd Rennaker. "They managed to hold on. Our defense looked good but we need to work on offense." Darby scored first with a 15-yard field goal by Matt McCready. Garrett Becker then ran four yards for the touchdown in the fourth quarter. R.J. Higgins kicked the PAT. Troy scored when B.J. Orr took a 20 yard pass from Chad Myers. Darby then ran out the clock. Victor traveled to Superior where they took on the tough Bobcats. The Bobcats scored early and often in the 60-24 victory for the northern team. Victor's offense was led by Brandon Lane who had 123 yards on two carries and Corey Cromwell who passed for 101 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan McKinley had a five-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a two-yard TD in the fourth. Bryan Wemple and Mike Wilson were the recipients of Cromwell's touchdown passes at 31 yards and 15 yards respectively. |
