On to state for Hamilton boys golf team

The Hamilton boys team ran away with the Southwest A Divisional golf title on Saturday on their own course. With Eli Rogers leading the way, the Broncs cruised to the title and now look to the state championship this weekend in Laurel. The Hamilton team shot a 298. Anaconda was second with 364, Dillon third with 375, Stevensville with 383 and Frenchtown with 404.

“It was a perfect day for golf,” said Hamilton coach Owen Burch.

Rogers shot a blistering 68 to take the lead from teammate Brad Palin who shot a 73. Rogers has had some good practices and Burch said the win was not unexpected.

“I made some long puts today and hit the ball really well,” said Rogers. “What I focused on was just hitting the next shot. I didn’t want to think about anything else.”

Palin, who was leading the tournament until Rogers finished, said he was disappointed. “I knew he (Eli) was playing well and I just didn’t get the job done. I missed a lot of stupid puts that I don’t normally miss.”

The Bronc team has played well all season and worked hard to get to the level of play they are at now. Burch said Rogers, Palin and Tyler Jessop have shot in the 60’s in practice and adds that sophomore Kyle Lubke has the capability to shoot that low as well. Jessop finished with a 74 and Lubke shot an 83. The final team member, Dillon Frances, earned the final team berth last week in a play off against Graham Silcher.

“Dillon was so nervous,” said Burch. “Once he settled down, he played pretty well.

The top three teams and the top 15 individuals will compete at the State A tournament in Laurel. Although they haven’t had a chance to play the course this year, Thursday will be a practice day for the schools and Burch and company plan on getting in as much practice as possible. Burch said he hopes that this finale is not a repeat of last year’s state championship.

“The tournament was scheduled for Kalispell and we felt we had a chance on that course. Then they changed the tournament to Whitefish which gave them a big break.”

Whitefish went on to win and Hamilton placed third. Burch said that in order to win, they will have to play very strongly on the first day. “It’s Laurel’s home course. That’s why the first day is so important. If we get too far behind, their confidence on their home course will be huge. We have to put ourselves in a position to win.”

Top 15 individuals: Eli Rogers, Hamilton 68; Brad Palin, Hamilton 73; Tyler Jessop, Hamilton 74; Anthony Wood, Anaconda 81; Kyle Lubke, Hamilton 83; Brett Creger, Dillon 84; Milan Plachy, Stevensville 90; Geoff Dierenfeldt, Anaconda 91; Jackson Wagner, Anaconda 91; Troy Wolff, Frenchtown 91; Nigel McCallum, Stevensville 91; Marcus Osborne, Dillon 92; Tyler Love, Dillon 95; Chris Merritt, Frenchtown 95; Dillon Francis, Hamilton 95.

Four girls from Hamilton will advance to the state tournament even though the girls’ team finished fourth. Meg Maclean shot a 106 to take fourth. Emily Winter shot a 118 for 12th place and Mishaila Conway (125) and Alyssa Heath (131) filled the last two spots. Teryn Green of Anaconda won the medal with an 84.

Semisi Rigby also caught a touchdown pass from Brenneman from 14 yards out. Brenneman passed for 241 yards and completed 20 of 49 passes.
