City Council to consider FlatIron annexation

By Michael Howell

After simmering for years, the FlatIron annexation proposal is finally moving to the front burner as a public hearing is scheduled before the Hamilton City Council this Thursday evening, September 18, at Hamilton City Hall. In an unusual move, the Council has already decided to schedule a second meeting on September 23 for a continuation of the public hearing. Councilors considered it essential for a representative from BBC Research and Consulting, the consulting firm that conducted a fiscal analysis of the annexation proposal, to be present to answer questions concerning that report. Rather than cancel the initial public hearing it was decided in advance to continue the hearing on September 23, when the consultant could attend. More...

The wildland fire that burned the historic Alta Pine earlier in August was human caused. Since the exact source has not been identified, the fire investigation is ongoing. The Forest Service is requesting information from those who were in the area or visited the site on or near August 16-19, 2008. Those who feel they may have information useful to the investigation are asked to call 363-7108. The tree was burning from top to bottom when discovered on August 20th. Fire quickly established itself in the hollow trunk and by mid-morning, the top half of the tree fell after burning through. The Alta Pine was believed to be the second largest ponderosa pine in Montana. At its prime, the 830+ year old tree was 114 feet tall and had a circumference of 13 feet, 3 inches. The tree is listed on the Register of Historic Trees of the United States, and the surrounding area is managed by the Forest Service as a historic site.

County publishes Growth Policy info

By Michael Howell

Faced with a ballot issue calling for repeal of the County’s Growth Policy, the Commissioners decided to publish some “Facts about the Ravalli County Growth Policy” so voters could make an informed decision. The resulting informational pamphlet supposedly does not take a pro or con stand on the issue, but merely relates some facts regarding its origin and composition. More...
