Bitterroot Classic Triathlon held

Young cowgirls and cowboys finish season

Bitterroot Classic Triathlon held

It takes an army of volunteers to put on the Bitterroot Classic Triathlon but judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, it was worth it. Ronald McDonald was there giving out free food, families were there competing and supporting other family members. The field of almost 300 ranged from the very young to the young at heart. This is the fourth annual event, which raises money for the Ronald McDonald House.

Athletes swam 750 yards at the Bitterroot Aquatic Center – 15 laps – to begin the race. They had to bike 20K on a course that was laid out to the east of Hamilton. Following the bike leg, the racers then donned their running shoes and headed out along Marcus to Freeze Lane and Eastside Highway for a 5K run.

“We had everything from a bicycle built for two to elite, world class athletes,” said spokeswoman Amy James Linton.

The carnival-like atmosphere added to the excitement. With three physical therapy companies on sight to give massages to the athletes once they were finished with the race, rock music playing, a jumping house for the kids, and of course lots of hand clapping for everyone who participated, it was fun for everyone.

There was also a children’s triathlon. The young athletes had to swim the length of the pool. Once that was completed they grabbed their bike or tricycle and pedaled down Kurtz Lane to Marcus where they turned around. About halfway back, they had to leave their bikes and race the rest of the way. Results were not available for this race but almost 100 entrants were expected.

Young cowgirls and cowboys finish season

The Ravalli County Junior Rodeo Association recently wrapped up another season. The club began about 17 years ago and is still going strong. These days, the children of the original participants are now beginning to compete.

The events in the Junior Rodeos are designed with an eye towards the High School Rodeo Association. There are roping events and timed events such as barrel racing and pole bending. There are three divisions – 8 and Under; Juniors (9-13); and Seniors (14-18). Four rodeos are held from the end of May through the first of August. Points are compiled and year-end awards are given at an awards banquet later this fall. Many contestants move on to compete at the High School level after having this experience.
