Two fires burning near StevensvilleOn Sunday, August 21, around noon a fire exploded in Alder Gulch, in the Sapphire Mountains east of Stevensville. The fire covered about 250 acres only a few hours later and by Monday had burned to the ridge that divides the Bitterroot and Lolo National Forests and covered an estimated 500 acres. The fire is burning on the Missoula Ranger District but the Lolo and Bitterroot Forests are working cooperatively at this time. Officials believe it is a lightning caused holdover fire that sprang to life due to the hot and dry conditions. More... Hamilton adopts preliminary budgetBy Michael Howell The Hamilton City Council, at its August 17 meeting, adopted a preliminary 2010-2011 budget with a levy of 162.4 mills, a reduction of 10 mills compared to the last few years. Trespassing charges against Spreadbury droppedBy Michael Howell Trespassing charges against former Hamilton mayoral candidate Michael Spreadbury were dismissed in Ravalli County District Court last week. He was originally charged with trespassing at the Bitterroot Valley Public Library after being told not to enter the property following a dispute with then Library director Nansu Roddy. Roddy had refused to place a letter written by Spreadbury outlining various accusations against Ravalli County officials on the public reference desk. Spreadbury was originally found guilty of trespassing in City Court but had appealed that decision to District Court where the charges were dropped. More... County considers Logan Road improvementsBy Michael Howell Ravalli County Commissioner Jim Rokosch and County Road and Bridge Department Supervisor David Ohnstad came to Stevensville last week to meet with members of the Stevensville Main Street Associations Economic Restructuring Committee, town officials and other residents and business owners to discuss plans for improvements on Logan Road that runs north and south on the east side of town.
