Trees planted at Fairgrounds - an arboreal heritage renewed

By Michael Howell

For those who miss the line of stately old giant Carolina Poplars that once lined the road along the south side of the Fairgounds in Hamilton, last Thursday was a day of renewal and promise as new trees were planted to replace the dying old giants that were removed for safety considerations earlier this year. The grand champion entry in the Creamery Picnic Parade was the green and white dray wagon driven by Sara Jane Neel with her grandpa, Bill Snedigar, riding beside her and her uncle Dean in the back. Mr. Snedigar, a retired blacksmith and welder, started building the wagon more than 30 years ago but didn't finish the project until this summer. Snedigar and his three sons – Greg, Dean, and Ron – helped set the wheels earlier this spring. Since then the family has painted the wagon and put a small plaque on it bearing the words “Snedigar Blacksmith & Welding." Sara and Grandpa have made several trips around the neighborhood, breaking the wagon in and getting ready for their appearance in the parade. Snedigar has owned the mules, Sammy and Burbon, for many years and has enjoyed passing his driving knowledge on to his granddaughter. Jean Schurman photo.
