Red Sox take second, Bucs surprise a few

The Bitterroot Red Sox extended their season one more week on Sunday after finishing second in the American Legion Western District Tournament in Hamilton over the weekend. Although the Red Sox lost to the Mission Valley Mariners in the championship game, they will still advance to the state tournament that begins this week in Billings.

Sunday’s championship game against the Mariners was the second game of the day for the Red Sox. The Mariners quickly got on the board when Derick Rathe knocked a single for an RBI to score Tyler Linse. Rathe then scored on a passed ball. The fresher Mariners continued to methodically find the holes in the Red Sox’ defense and put runs on the board.

The Red Sox came alive in the sixth inning when Trevor Brown hit a single. Brown, who took his knocks in the tournament, had to make an emergency dental run between games after being hit in the mouth in the earlier game of the day and getting his braces broken. The versatile player also took a dive over the center field fence while going for a fly ball in Saturday night’s game. His single sparked a three-run rally in the inning.

“We started to come back in that game,” said manager BJ Ihde of his Red Sox team. “I think we just ran out of steam, made some mistakes and the game got away from us.”

The Mariners went on to win, 18-3.

The Red Sox played the earlier game against the Bitterroot Bucs. That game began with a bit of fanfare when ABC/ESPN sports commentator Brent Musbuger greeted each of the players on both teams and then threw out the opening pitch.

The Red Sox got their bats going early and quickly got on the scoreboard. Drew Zeiler hit a solo home run in the second inning and was 3-for-6. Rodee Anderson kept the home run derby going with a homer in the fifth and a 3-run home run in the sixth. Anderson finished with seven RBIs and went 4-for-5 in the 23-11 victory. Ryan Weigle was 3-for-3 with two sacrifice flys.

Tyler Lind smacked a three-run home run in the third to open the scoring for the Bucs. Austin Erler went 2-for-4 with two RBI doubles. Riley Philips, who was the starting pitcher, went 2-for-4 with a double. Coe Golden had two singles and was 2-for-3 at bat.

“We ran out of pitching,” said Bucs' manager Derik Stevens. “We go to the point where we were low on arms.”

The Bucs opened their tournament against the Kootenai Valley Rangers. After battling for five scoreless innings, the Rangers got on the board when Alex Lesowski crossed the plate in the top of the sixth inning. That opened the door for the Bucs. Jeremy Johnson got on base on a walk and then Austin Nogle hit a full-count single to advance Johnson. With no outs, Riley Philips stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Johnston. Golden also took four balls and the bases were loaded. Erler stepped up and hit another sac fly to center field to give the Bucs the one-run lead. R.T. Llewellen hit a single RBI to pad the lead. But the Rangers came right back and tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. They took a one-run lead into the bottom of the 9th where Billy Hanna stepped up and hit a long ball for a double and RBI when Zac Blackstun scored and tied the game. The Bucs held the Rangers in the top of the 10th. With two outs tallied, Erler stepped up and hit a double to put himself in scoring position. Llewellen stepped up and smacked a long ball to score Erler and give the Bucs the 5-4 win.

“We worked really hard to get where we are now,” said Tyler Lind of his Bucs’ teammates. “We believed in ourselves all the way, that was the key.”

Next up for the Bucs were the Missoula Mavs. Once again, the upstart Bucs proved to be the surprise of the tournament. Lind knocked a home run that scored two in the eighth inning to give the Bucs the 4-3 edge. Dan Lockman was the winning pitcher. Llewellyn and Erler each had doubles.

With the win, the Bucs moved into the semi final game against the Mariners. The Bucs had the lead at the top of the seventh but couldn’t hold on and lost, 12-5. Lind was 2-for2 and had a solo home run in the sixth inning. Golden had a 2-RBI double.

“Our seniors came out and carried the load, but all of them played hard,” concluded Stevens.

The Red Sox began their tournament play with a loss to the Libby Loggers, 6-5, on Thursday. They then had to work their way back through the loser’s bracket to the championship game.

Their second game was against the Glacier Twins. The Sox beat the Twins, 5-1, to keep their dreams of state alive. Next up were the always-tough Missoula Mavs. The determined Red Sox left nothing to chance in this game. With Anderson on the mound, they systematically played tough defense while stepping up their hitting. Anderson recorded a no-hitter and pitched a complete game. He had 12 strikeouts as well. Jake Capko got on base twice by virtue of being beaned by the pitcher. It was nothing new though; he’s been hit 27 times this season. Logan Connors hit a home run that scored three. The game ended on the 10-run rule in the seventh with the Red Sox winning, 15-0.

Both Mission and the Red Sox will advance to the state tournament. Coach Ihde said he fully expected these two teams to meet up again and feels both teams are probably the teams to beat.

“The west is known for great baseball. I think the team to beat is always the team from the west,” he concluded.
