Whaley homestead being preserved and interpreted

Youth Conservation Corps members Brant Grove, Garin McGrann, Lindsey Brassfield, Supervisor Bruce Murray, and Rylee Johnson stand behind the white picket fence they constructed to replace the dilapidated barbed wire fence along Wildfowl Lane at the historic Whaley homestead located on the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge near Stevensville. They also helped re-glaze the windows of the house. The period fence is getting an old fashioned whitewash with lime paint.

Chris Weatherly of Bitterroot Woodwright has the kind of knowledge and experience that an old home in need of repair really loves. He’s a historic renovator ‘par excellence.’ He recently returned from five weeks of work in Pryor, Montana on the Crow reservation where he worked on restoring Chief Plenty Coups’ cabin. “I get excited about any historic building,” said Weatherly, “but the Whaley homestead is my adopted baby. It’s very special to me.”

Commissioners add two options to Airport EA

Following a four and a half hour meeting on Monday, July 20, the Ravalli County Commissioners voted unanimously to send the Environmental Assessment of proposed airport improvements back to the drawing board. They want two additional alternatives to be included in the EA and more details about the costs and benefits of all the alternatives. More...

On Monday, County Commissioners faced a roomful of people and heard from over thirty of them about various alternatives for improving the Hamilton Airport. In the end the Commissioners directed Scott Bell of Morrison-Maierle to add two new alternatives to the EA and provide more details about the cost and benefits of all the options.

State report on county’s floodplain program draws commissioners’ ire

The Ravalli County Commissioners last week sent a scathing letter to Mary Sexton, Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), in response to the agency’s latest Community Assistance Visit (CAV) Report. The CAV Report, a type of floodplain program review usually conducted every three years, reviewed both the county’s floodplain regulations as well as its administrative and enforcement procedures to see if they are in compliance with minimal federal and state standards. While the report noted few problems with the county’s regulations, it was more critical with respect to local enforcement efforts. More...
