Stevi council member resigns

By Michael Howell

Stevensville Town Councilor Clayton Floyd tendered his resignation “effective immediately” at the end of the last Council meeting held on June 16. Floyd’s resignation came in response to allegations made by Council President Pat Groninger. Groninger accused Floyd of exceeding his authority as a council member by taking actions on his own without council authority on a number of occasions. Groninger and Councilor Robin Holcomb (Councilor Desera Towle dissented) passed a resolution reprimanding Floyd for exceeding his authority. Floyd denied Groninger’s allegations, and said that his resignation has more to do with Groninger’s relentless attacks upon his honesty and integrity than with anything he did. More...

Mountain Butterfly, a Stevensville-based company that offers hot air balloon rides, sailed over the community Saturday morning at the start of Western Heritage Days. It was the maiden voyage for the company's new balloon that carries from 8 to 10 people. The new balloon was made in Spain. The company has another being shipped from Florida that can carry a few more people. They have a smaller balloon in the fleet that carries only two passengers. The owner of Mountain Butterfly, Michael Reese, has piloted balloons since 1982. He has flown in Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe and Jackson Hole over the years. The company offers valley flights, cross mountain flights, high altitude and long distance flights as well. Flights cost $180 per person up to eight people. Nine or more people on a flight reduces the cost to $150 per person. Anyone interested in a flight may call for reservations at 777-3858 or 777-0520. Flights are dependent upon weather and wind conditions at the time. James Hewes photo.

At the end of last week’s Hamilton City Council meeting, under non-agenda items for consideration, Councilor Al Mitchell brought up what he called a “a new twist on the medical marijuana issue.” He said he didn’t know if it was an enforcement issue, or something that should be sent to council, or the legislative committee of the council. He was walking his dog when a citizen approached him with a complaint about a neighbor burning his marijuana trimmings. More...
