Good weather and great performances at FrenchtownThe sun was shining in Frenchtown and five of the valleys track teams took advantage of the good weather at the CTA Invitational track meet. With 12 teams competing, the meet featured a nice mixture of Class A, B and C schools. The Frenchtown Broncs won their own meet on the boys team scoring, with Corvallis coming in second. Polson won the girls team scoring, with Florence taking second. Corvallis Dalton Sybrant again dominated the discus and shot put events. Sybrant set a meet record in the discus with an effort of 169-4. The old record of 168-4 was held by Hone of Bigfork and was set in 1990. Teammate Chris Jessop took second with a throw of 153-5. Sybrant threw the shot put 53-11 ? to take first in that event. Slater Powell of Corvallis took both the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles. He also ran a leg on both the 400 relay and the 1,600 relay. Both those teams won as well. The same relay team ran both races and was comprised of Myles Jessop, Powell, Tyler Bonngard and Mahlone Jessop. Myles Jessop also won the 400. Corvallis Whitney Henderson picked up two wins as well. She clocked a 13.07 to win the 100 and then won the 200. She was also on the 400 relay team which placed third behind Florence and Polson. Darby was without their senior members but that didnt stop the distance runners from scoring points. Seth Garbett won the 3,200 with a time of 10:20.35. Garbett was fourth in the 1,600. Matt Stout was fifth in the 1,600 and fourth in the 3,200. Sean Abrahamsen finished sixth in the 3,200. Keri Ledford was fifth in both the 1,600 and the 3,200 for the Darby girls. The Florence girls team had a heyday behind the performance of Katie Niemeier. Niemeir won both the 300 and the 100 hurdles event. The Florence junior clocked 45.25 in the 300, which broke the meet record of 46.7 set by Kasey Harwood of Polson in 2003. Niemeirs time is currently the fastest time reported in the state in the 300. Niemeir also broke the 100 hurdles record of 15.10. The old record was set by Alicia Torrey of Florence in 2001 and tied by Harwood in 2003. She is also leading the state in the 100 hurdles. But Niemeir didnt limit herself to the hurdles. She ran a leg on the 400 relay team which won with a time of 51.58 and was on the second place 1,600 relay team as well. The 400 relay team was made up of Niemeir, Brandy Crews, Odessa Conley and Cortney Reynolds. Alicia Toews finished third in the 100, fourth in the long jump. Corvallis rallies to defeat the Lady BroncsThe Corvallis Blue Devils rallied from three runs down in the third inning to a tied game at the end of six innings. A game-winning home run by Markie Gurley in the top of the seventh put the Blue Devils on top of the Hamilton Broncs, 5-4, on Thursday. I wasnt really nervous, said Markie Gurley of her home run in the 7th. Last year I was getting around on it at the end of the year. This year I started focusing more and not being so stressed, just connecting with the ball. Connect with the ball she did, and powered her Blue Devils to a seventh straight victory. Gurley was 3-for-4 at bat and had three RBIs. Hamilton came out and scored twice in the first two innings to take the lead. But then Kasie Conder stepped up to the bag and dropped the perfect bunt to load the bases in the top of the fifth. Gurley followed with a line drive just over the third basemans head and scored three runners and tied the game. We absolutely stole one today, against a quality club like Hamilton. That is not going to happen very often, said Corvallis coach Rich Borden. Weve had a couple of games where weve had to scratch and claw a little bit. Its kind of been our term the last couple of weeks, coming from behind. Borden said he thinks his team comes out a bit tight and has to relax before they can settle down and play. But he also is optimistic the team is feeling more comfortable on the field and able to back up Conders quality pitching. Both teams committed a lot of mistakes, which is very uncharacteristic of both teams, said Hamilton coach Jesse Wilson. They took better advantage of the mistakes than we did. You cant play six innings and not a seventh. Hamilton was led by Melisa Hoods triple and RBI. Amanda Hood and Kristen Ferguson each had a double. Corvallis 010 030 1 Hamilton 220 000 0 Kasie Conder and Danielle Murray. Nicki Koning and Sarah Callaghan. W. Conder (7-0). Frenchtown InvitationalSoftball teams from across Western Montana sized each other up at the annual Frenchtown Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Although both A and B/C teams competed, the only conference game was the Florence/Troy game which Florence won, 15-5. Kayla Daniels was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Florence lost to Whitefish, 16-6 and Ronan, 23-8. They defeated Stevensville, 14-5. Maddie Jones was 2-for-3 for the Yellowjackets in that game and had an RBI. Shelby Meuchel had two doubles for the Falcons and was 2-for-4. Chelsea Ralls was 2-for-2 at bat. Ralls is also the Florence pitcher and was credited with the win. Stevensville defeated Browning, 17-2. Izzy Miller was on the mound for the Jackets. She was 3-for-4 at bat and had two doubles and two RBIs. Jones had three RBIs and a triple. The Jackets lost to Thompson Falls, 10-0 in their other game. Corvallis won three games but picked up their first loss of the season to Polson in their opening game of the tournament. The third inning gave the Blue Devils problems when Polsons Sarah Newton and Rochelle Woods each had a double and the Pirates scored three runs. A homer in the fourth was the final straw. Kasie Conder had a home run for the Blue Devils and two RBIs but the Blue Devils couldnt catch their magic for the final innings. We just have to keep playing as best we can and clean up the errors, said Borden. Kasie is a great pitcher and we need to be able to back her up. Corvallis then defeated Libby, 12-0, and Thompson Falls. Hamilton lost to Thompson Falls, Libby, Loyola and Polson.
Red Sox sweep BucsThe Bitterroot Red Sox defeated the Bitterroot Bucs, 10-4 and 8-5 in a doubleheader on Saturday. Ryan Weigle pitched the first game and struck out 11 Bucs. It was Rodee Anderson pitching for the Red Sox in the second game.
