Sports at a GlanceAll stories by Jean Schurman Corvallis Invitational track meet heldFlorence wins againTennis RecapLegion ShortsCorvallis Invitational track meet heldThe weather cooperated somewhat on Saturday; at least it didnt snow, for the Bob Reed/RCIA Invite in Corvallis. The weather kept a couple of schools away, but that didnt stop the Corvallis boys and the Stevensville girls from winning. Corvallis easily outdistanced second place Frenchtown in the boys competition. Slater Powell won two events, the 200-meter race and the 110 hurdles to anchor the win. He also ran in the 400 relay and the 1,600 relay. Powell set an unofficial state best time in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.49. Chris Jessop was also a double winner for Corvallis. The junior distance runner claimed both the 1,600 and the 3,200 races. His time of 4:29.03 was just a bit short of the state best he set last Tuesday at the Top Ten meet in Missoula. Jessop set the time to beat at 4:28.3 in that meet. Colby Henderson won the 800 and was third in the 1,600. Austin Landis continued to dominate the javelin competition. His throw of 191-9 was 23 farther than second place. Landis also placed third in the discus and second in the shot put. Darby finished in third place. Aaron Johnston won the 200 and the long jump. He was second in the 100 as well. Hes starting to add more events, said coach Steve Gideon. Hes one of the best sprinters in Montana but with this weather, its better to be safe than sorry. Seth Garbett, who clocked a blistering 9:31.99 at the Top Ten meet, finished behind Chris Jessop in both the 1,600 and the 3,200. Gideon said he was a little mad at Garbett for taking off so early in the 3,200 at the Top Ten. He was 700 meters out (from the finish line) when he took off and I was yelling at him that hed better be ready. He ran the last lap in 62 seconds, which isnt fast enough yet, but he did it. Garbetts time at the Top Ten meet in the 3,200 was 9:31.99. Currently, the second best time is 9:40.91 and Chris Jessop is holding the third best time at 9:43.5. Darbys other first place finish at the Bob Reed meet came from Ben Robbins in the triple jump. Gideon said Robbins had taken time off for the senior trip and was just getting back in sync with his jumps. Alex Mitchell of Florence won the high jump with an effort of 6-1. He finished second in the 110 and 300 hurdles, second in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump. Victors Kurt Manely finished second in the javelin with a throw of 168-8. That is the second longest throw in Class C in the state at this time. Hamiltons big guys, Ty Exner and Cody Sellers, won the discus and the shot put. Exner heaved the disc 148-2. Sellers putted the shot 46-9. Stevensville won the girls team scoring with some expected wins and some unexpected wins. Brekka Johnson won the long jump and the triple jump. Lakyn Connors took first in the 300 hurdles and was second in the 100 hurdles. Brittany Chilcott won the javelin and Molly Brewer won the high jump. Hamiltons Kelsi Almond continued to prevail. She won the 100-meter race and then branched out and took second in the long jump and fifth in the high jump. Shes been unbelievable, said Hamilton coach John Stromberg. She long jumps, runs the 100, 200, our relays and even high jumps on occasion. Misha Trotter won the 400 with a time of 59.25, the best time in the state to date. She also won the 800. Stromberg said Trotter has been the mainstay of the Hamilton girls team for four years and has become a quiet leader for the team. Meghan Kratofil won the shot put for Hamilton and was third in the discus. Florences Megan Leathers won the discus.
