Find out where the snowpack levels are currently and what that means in relation to previous years.

Ray Nickless, Hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Missoula, will talk about why snowpack in the Bitterroot Mountains of western Montana is half of what it normally is this time of year. “Blame it on El Nino,” which refers to the large-scale ocean-atmospheric climate occurrence linked to a periodic warming in sea-surface temperatures. Learn how El Nino forms, is measured and the effects it has on weather patterns that influence the western U.S. Winter snowpack over the last 20 years in the Bitterroot Mountains will be examined and compared to El Nino years. Spring and summer precipitation that has fallen in the Bitterroot Mountains and valleys during El Nino years will also be considered. Summer streamflow on the Bitterroot River following El Nino winters will be examined and river volume forecasts for the upcoming spring/summer will be presented. Lack of snowpack has led to moderate to severe drought status across much of western Montana including the Bitterroots. Finally, short and long range weather forecasts for the upcoming weeks, months and summer will be presented.

A question and answer discussion will follow the presentation. The presentation is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be served.

The rescue of this weed, which is nearly extinct except in certain soils here in the Valley, needs public exposure to succeed. This seminar will explain how to notify the rescuers, dig and transplant the bulbs, and what is necessary for the plant's survival. All persons who know anything about the flower, those who have the bulbs blooming on their property (the blooms are annual but fleeting), or who want to know how to save the bitterroot are invited to participate.
