Tennis - Bitterroot Invitational

Local athletes do well at meets in Missoula

Missoula was the hub of the track world in Western Montana over the weekend. Twenty-eight teams participated in either the Stone Invitational at Frenchtown or the Seeley Swan Invitational at Missoula Big Sky. Hamilton and Florence were at the Seeley Invitational while the rest of the valley’s teams were in Frenchtown.

At the Stone Invitational in Frenchtown, Corvallis continued to run roughshod over its opponents in the boys’ competition even without Dalton Sybrant participating. The Blue Devils scored 102 points to second place Frenchtown’s 77 points. The Blue Devils won both relays. The 400 team of Mahlone Jessop, Tyler Bonngard, Ben Dixon, and Slater Powell set a meet record of 43.86. The previous record was 43.90 which was set by Whitefish in 1998. It was Bonngard, Jessop, Powell and Drew Zeiler who ran and won the 1,600 relay. Austin Byron won the pole vault with an effort of 13-6 and Austin Landis won the javelin with a throw of 189-6. Corvallis’s Page Squire won the 200 and the 100 hurdles for the girls.

Darby had a double winner in Seth Garbett. The distance runner clocked a 4:36.0 in the 1,600 to win that race. He also won the 3,200 with a time of 10:13.26. On the girl’s side, Darby finished in second place behind Polson. Heather Demorest won both the 1,600 and the 3,200 for the Tigers.

Hamilton’s Dillon Wood clears the bar at 11-6 in the pole vault at the Seeley-Swan track meet. Wood took second in the event with a vault of 12-0. Jean Schurman photo.

Stevensville’s Brekka Johnson won the triple jump with that leap of 34-10, one inch farther than Loyola’s Jordan Pfau. Johnson was second in the 200 and the long jump as well.

At the Seeley Swan Invitational, the Florence girls had a banner day behind senior Katie Niemeir. The senior, who has signed with Montana State, won the 100, 200, 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles.

Hamilton’s Michelle Jones won the 400. Jones also ran the anchor on the 1,600 relay that clocked a 4:16.57 to win that race. Megan Baker, Misha Trotter and Camie Westfall ran the first three legs. Wyatt Lawrence and Jake Jessop took first and second in the 800. Jessop was third in the 1,600 as well. Hamilton’s 1,600 relay team won that race. Dillon Wood finished second in the pole vault, with a vault of 12 feet.
