Lone Rock School approves impact fee study

At a special meeting last Thursday, April 6, the Lone Rock School Board, with one abstention, unanimously approved contracting for an Impact Fee study to be done to address the cost of new developments to the school district. Chairman of the Board Ryon Brewer stepped down and abstained from voting, citing a possible conflict of interest over the issue since he works primarily with real estate and development concerns. Above right: A steel beam manufactured at Selway Corporation heads out by rail from Stevensville to Seattle, where it will be shipped to Alaska for bridge-building. This beam is 120 feet long and weighs 100,000 pounds. Two cranes from Ott's in Missoula are used to lead the beams onto railroad cars. Stevi School Board discusses rehiring process

At the May 9th Stevensville School Board meeting, the Board will be considering rehiring separate lists of untenured and tenured teachers and building administrators. The matter was up for discussion, however, at the April 4th board meeting and possible changes in the rehiring procedure were considered at length.

Stevensville Fire Department seeks funds for thermal imaging camera

The Stevensville Fire Department is out to raise $12,000 to purchase a hand-held, lightweight thermal imaging camera that will benefit the department in a number of ways. It can allow firefighters whether standing, walking, crawling, or kneeling a view of the scene in front of them even through dense smoke or in the dark. Its flexibility allows the ability to look under, over, and around obstacles, or it can be braced against the body.

Floodplain Office stops a few projects

Ravalli County Floodplain Administrator Laura Hendrix has issued two Cease and Desist orders in the past month halting work in the floodplain in two separate and unconnected cases. A third case, being investigated, may end up in moving a new home out of the Floodplain. One was an order to Ken and Judith Siebel, owners of the Bitterroot Springs Ranch, south of Stevensville, following a diesel spill from an excavator doing some apparently unpermitted activity in Mitchell Slough. The second was issued to then Ravalli County Planning Board member Garry Shook for alleged floodplain violations on property that he owns south of Hamilton between Highway 93 and the river. Shook has subsequently resigned from the Planning Board. The third involves a new home possibly built without a permit on the Conner Cut-off Road. Hendrix said that house may eventually have to be moved.
