Huls Dairy garners national recognition

By Michael Howell

Huls Dairy of Corvallis was selected as one of only 75 Blue Ribbon Small Business Award winners from across the nation, and the only one from Montana, as part of the competition for the national U.S. Chamber of Commerce “Dream Big Award.” The local dairy was recommended to be placed in nomination for the award by the Agriculture Committee of the Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce. Rick O’Brien, director of the Bitterroot Chamber and Bob Rummel of Quality Supply were instrumental in getting the nomination submitted. More...

The Huls’ cows are milked on a revolving platform with twenty four stalls. It takes about ten minutes to make one revolution and most cows are done in that time. The average milking yields about 80 lbs. of milk per cow. Each cow gives on a curve that ranges from 30 to 40 lbs., up to 130 to 140 and then back down again. Michael Howell photo.

Dairy farmer Dan Huls, shows off the bedding for the cows in the free stall barn area that is made of recycled rubber tires, ground up and sewn together and then covered with a felt-like canvas that is water repellent and yet still breathes. Michael Howell photo.

Pooling efforts

By Victoria Howell

The Stevensville Community Foundation (SCF) has dived in to help the Town of Stevensville keep its swimming pool open this year. A budget shortfall had put the pool in jeopardy and, although citizens have been trying to raise enough money to keep the pool open, its future remained uncertain until the Foundation took on the project. Now it is almost certain that the pool will be open for the 2010 season. More...

Scrap Drive to benefit pool

After a year off in 2009, the Stevensville Community Foundation will resume its annual Spring Scrap Drive in the months of April and May. But unlike former drives, the funds derived will not be applied to the foundation's grant cycles, but will be entirely devoted to refurbishing the community swimming pool in Lewis and Clark park in Stevensville. A new public swimming pool code had put the future use of the pool in doubt, but the foundation has been working with the state parks commission in Helena and obstacles have been cleared away.
