Methodist Hanging of the Greens

The Stevensville United Methodist Church Choir invites you to the 53rd Annual Hanging of the Greens, Sunday, December 5 at 7 p.m. Just as “cookie bakers” have blended their precious ingredients for the most special Christmas cookies over the years, the SUMC choir has composed a program of peace, hope and love to illuminate the message of Jesus’ birth and life. You may be thinking, “Mmmmmm, sugar, butter, cinnamon...” Yes! You are right! But there’s more! The choir will be adding the words of Isaiah, St. Francis of Assisi, Mother Teresa, and Jesus to the mixture of Christmas carols old and new.

The church tradition of singing Christmas songs and decorating the church began in December 1957. It wasn’t until the following year that it was officially called the “Hanging of the Greens.” The four women who began the tradition are Ruby Longbottom, Anna Prince, Julie Wallace, and Emily Whitesitt.

Come lift your spirits with new Christmas music, the annual unpacking of the Nativity scene, children decorating the Christmas tree and many delicious Christmas cookies.
