Stevi agrees to hire two part-time police officersBy Michael Howell After a great deal of discussion about the history of how the town got into the position of having only one police officer and the difficulties in hiring a new officer “off the street” and questions of liability, the Stevensville Town Council decided to look internally and hire two part-time temporary positions from within the Reserve Officer ranks. Stevensville Police Chief Marble said that, between the two working two days a week, weekends could be adequately covered. The temporary positions would expire on March 2011. More... Scalpin’ Skalsky celebrates 90th birthdayBy Michael Howell I first heard of ‘Scalpin’ Skalsky, the Stevensville barber, a quarter of a century ago. We had just started our newspaper in 1985 and Stevensville’s Martha Burke, mother of 12, began submitting articles to the Star. One of her first stories was about Steve Skalsky, aka ‘Scalpin’ Skalsky’, and his long and illustrious career spent cutting hair at his barbershop on Main Street. Martha Burke, who went on to become National Mother of the Year, is no longer with us, but Steve Skalsky is still around and still cutting hair. He celebrated his 90th birthday on Sunday, November 7, and by the next Tuesday he was back at work as usual. He is the oldest licensed barber in the state of Montana and he is working in the oldest barbershop in the state as well. More...   East Fork Road project completedSula and Darby area residents gathered outside the Sula Community Center, along with Federal Highway Administration, Forest Service, Montana Department of Transportation, and Ravalli County officials, to cut the ribbon opening the newly rehabilitated East Fork Road last Tuesday, November 9. The clubhouse parking area also got a new pavement job as part of the project. More...  The ribbon was cut last week at the dedication ceremony for the newly rehabilitated East Fork Road. Attending the ceremony were members of the Darby community along with officials from the Federal Highway Administration, Forest Service, Montana Department of Transportation, and Ravalli County, as well as crewmembers from Schellinger Construction of Columbia Falls, all of whom played a role in the project. Forest Service seeks comment on pine beetle management activities around Lake ComoBitterroot National Forest officials are looking for public comment on proposed vegetation management activities in and around the Lake Como Recreation Area to address mountain pine beetle concerns. The analysis area encompasses about 5,000 acres of Forest Service lands on the Darby Ranger District, north of Lake Como in the Lick Creek drainage.
