The ‘People’s Tree’ heads for D.C.By Michael Howell The National Christmas Tree, called “the People’s Tree,” destined for display at the nation’s capital, rumbled out of the Bitterroot Valley last Tuesday, wrapped and boxed on the bed of a semi-truck trailer headed for Washington D.C. The 3,370 mile trip is planned to take 20 days, with the tree arriving in the capital on November 24. The tree will be lighted in a ceremony on the lawn of the Capitol building on December 2. Growth Policy repealedBy Michael Howell Following the results of the November 4 election, Ravalli County no longer has a Growth Policy. Voters approved repealing the Growth Policy by a vote of 9,674 to 8,367. No replacement policy may be considered for two years, according to state law. It would not be until the 2010 general election before any new growth policy could be adopted. Without a growth policy no zoning regulations may be established under Montana’s zoning laws either. Republicans nearly sweep countyBy Michael Howell The only Democrats to win a majority vote in the 2008 general election in Ravalli County were U.S. Senator Max Baucus and Governor Brian Schweitzer. Other than those two, every Republican candidate on the ballot, from McCain for President to Mood for Public Service Commissioner, received a majority vote from Ravalli County residents. All the local legislative seats and the two County Commissioner seats went to Republicans as well. More...
