Local recycling resurrected

Group searches for permanent site

By Michael Howell

Since the closing of the Ravalli Recycling center last year, a group of valley residents, organizations, companies and officials have been working hard to orchestrate the establishment of a new and permanent recycling center in the valley and are inching towards the realization of that goal. A breakthrough was recently reached when the Fair Board agreed to allow the use of the Ravalli County Fairgrounds as a temporary collection site. Those collections are underway and take place once a week on Monday at the north end of the Fairgrounds from 3 to 6 p.m. (or until dark, whichever comes first). More...

Chris Schmitt of the Trapper Creek Job Corps and Colorado Springs spent Saturday afternoon stirring the apples in the giant caldron at McIntosh Apple Days, an annual event to benefit the Ravalli County Museum in Hamilton. Constant stirring is needed to turn the apples into wonderful butter that will be enjoyed all winter. The aroma of the apple butter soon had people lined up with money in hand to buy the delicious butter. Saturday's weather cooperated and by all accounts, record numbers of people attended this year's event. Jean Schurman photo.

The contest is sponsored by the Stevensville Art & Sculpture Society (SASS). The scarecrows will remain up this week along the Stevensville Bike Path, weather permitting. Photos courtesy of SASS.

Forest Service considers ‘bug proofing’ recreation area

By Michael Howell

The Stevensville Ranger District is considering vegetation management activities in and around the Bass Creek Recreation Area to address mountain pine beetle concerns. The Larry and Bass Creek area, located between Stevensville and Florence is a highly utilized recreation area on the forest, according to District Ranger Dan Ritter, and the plan is to get the work done quickly and with as little disturbance as possible. The recreation area covers about 1,200 acres and some form of treatment is planned on about 920 acres. More...

SAFE reports to community

By Michael Howell

The Ravalli County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence held its 13th annual Report to the Community last week in Hamilton. Every year coalition members gather, information is shared about the year’s activities and statistics, speakers are heard and awards are presented. This year’s speakers were Officer Dan Murphy from Butte-Silver Bow County Law Enforcement, and Adam Arlint from Montana State University’s Men Stopping Rape program. This year’s 11th Annual Courage Award went to Wendy Ervin and the Prevention Award went to Natalie Park. More...

Wendy Ervin was recipient of this year’s 11th Annual Courage Award presented last week at the Ravalli County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence’s “Report to the Community” luncheon. Ervin has recently completed a book about her family’s experiences with an abusive spouse, called “The Predator.” She began the book as part of a women’s writing group which she helped form at SAFE. Theresa Rivera, who nominated Ervin for the award, said, “In the beginning of telling her story, her voice was a bit apologetic, nervous, and even self-critical. But as she wrote each chapter, she began to understand that what had happened was not her fault. She began writing with a perspective of strength and courage to hold responsible the man accountable who had victimized her and her children.” Ervin read her favorite poem by Richard Kipling, “If”, to the gathering. By Michael Howell

At the last Stevensville Town Council meeting, held September 27, Councilor Pat Groninger raised questions about the new court schedule and the availability of the judge. Newly appointed Town Judge Marty Birkeneder is holding court one day a week on Friday afternoon and evening and is doing her paper work at home. More...
