Remember, I am a kitchen-table grandstander, not a politician. I look at things from the practical aspect, from sitting and talking in my kitchen with other folks about our valley. But I am stumped, even with a college education and 80 years of living, why a company would invest in a project that will have a net loss of $4.2m as reported in the most recent Bitterroot Star. Are they counting on the market price going bananas by the time there’s minerals coming out of the ground? I wouldn’t move into a time-consuming project that a community is against, knowing I was going to lose that much money. OH WAIT! They’re counting on government subsidies, because these minerals are rare and in the national interest! Taxpayers come to the rescue. Wreck our tourism on the Bitterroot, pollute our river, then ask us to support their effort, when the history of mining shows they don’t clean up after themselves in this state. Nope, I’m not going for it. History, economics and plain common sense says this just doesn’t add up.

The biggest issue with this entire project is that this is not even an U.S. company. The whole purpose of this project and the federal funding for it, is to secure United States supply chains. Yet they are allowing foreign company to do the work? Not only that but a foreign company that is purposely trying to fool people into thinking they are a U.S. company by naming their subsidiary US Metals. When in fact they are a Canadian company with a less than stellar environmental record. Even if you support this project, you should not support a foreign company doing it when the purpose is to secure OUR supply chains.

I agree ! Wait until our new wave republicans start endorsing this one . jobs jobs jobs to hell with the environmental laws. Drill drilll drill. Clear it as fast you can. Turn it into a wasteland. Then move onto the next piece of Montana. If you need a reminder look to Butte. There’s a reason Daly lived here and didn’t clearcut or mine. Wake up people !
