Steven Earl McCarter, 73, passed away in Post, Texas on January 16, 2023. Born on April 20, 1949 to Katharine Yates and Earl McCarter, he was raised alongside his brother, Mike McCarter, and educated in Denver, Colorado, attending the Denver Public School System and graduating from high school in 1967. He attended and graduated from the University of Colorado (Boulder) with a degree in environmental biology in 1971. Since that time, he pursued various interests, including travel and independent study of the wilderness world and its creatures, especially in the field of predator-prey relationships. While working primarily as an environmental consultant for more than 45 years, he was also an author, writing professionally since 1973. He used his own name for all non-fictional work and penned his fictional work under the pseudonym, “S. Bradley Stoner.”
His writing drew on the ample fodder of his interests, experience and fatherhood. His interests were wide ranging and included all of the sciences, history, and literature. He traveled extensively in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico and spent a great deal of time in the wilderness of North America. Married for more than three decades to the love of his life, Cherei McCarter, he was the father of two boys, Tyler Tanniehill and Beau McCarter, both now grown and on their own.
Since he lived in a number of places throughout his life, including Missouri, Illinois, Colorado, Montana, Kansas, Maryland and Texas, his family wished to publish his obituary in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana because he considered it “Heaven on Earth” and where he spent more than 17 years of his life.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Katharine Yates and Earl McCarter. He is survived by his immediate family; Cherei McCarter (wife), Tyler Tanneihill and Beau McCarter (sons), Andrea McCarter (daughter in-law), Brooke (grandaughter), Mike McCarter (brother), Dorothy McCarter (sister in-law), and a vast number of in-laws, nephews, nieces, colleagues and dear friends. He was loved by all who knew him and will be dearly missed.
A Memorial Tribute will be held in his honor this summer during July 4th weekend in Estes Park, Colorado, where family and friends will gather to spread his ashes.
His Grand Adventure will continue in Heaven, as he now soars with the angels.

Nathalie Cabrol says
Steve, I will miss you dearly. Our encounter was serendipitous, the best side of social media where I met Cherei. I saw in both of you the reflection of what I had with my husband: Pure and unconditional love. You have now joined Edmond in Heaven, or wherever the afterlife might be. The two of us will have a great deal of fun with each other. You shared in this world curiosity, love, inventiness, overwordly intelligence and you leave us both heartbroken. But rest assured that I will keep an eye on. Cherei. She is not alone, although nobody will ever be able to fill the gaping hole you left. But, I will be here when/if needed. You can count on me. As for me, I will deeply miss our chats about the universe, life, and so many other things. Ad astra, my friend. You’ve done well. Nathalie
