Legalizing marijuana in Montana is the next logical step in freeing up more resources to make our justice system more effective and efficient. The possession and consumption of marijuana should not be treated as a crime, and legalizing it at the state level will allow Montana to focus on prosecuting real crimes. A 2018 study of crime clearance rates in Washington and Colorado pre- and post-legalization showed that crime clearance rates increased because law enforcement was better able to allocate their resources toward solving violent crimes.
Voting YES on CI-118 and I-190 is a great way to make sure that law enforcement can focus on the crimes that negatively impact Montana’s communities. The tax revenue generated from the regulation of marijuana will help support our communities. 9.9% of the revenue generated will be allocated to veterans services, with the same proportion going toward substance abuse prevention. I urge citizens of Montana to legalize recreational marijuana through the initiatives CI-118 and I-190.
